I'm attempting to update the OS.
I have formatted the USB device on the Montage, copied the 8N700S_.PGM file to the USB device, with device inserted powered on Montage whilst holding down the [Cursor UP] and UTILITY] buttons, releasing when the Montage logo appears. (Also tried again, not releasing).
However, I get the following:
Searching for the updater . . . NG
Press [INC/YES] to retry.
The "NG" is in red. I'm assuming that the "NG" is an error message. (Not good, perhaps?).
Suggestions?
Try saving a file to your USB drive from the Montage. Sounds like it does not see your USB drive at all or the file is corrupt.
We are also assuming you copied the unzipped file from your computer to the USB stick without renaming it.
Your Montage is searching for, but not finding the necessary 8N70OS_.PGM file
Thanks, Bad Mister
I have successfully saved a file from the Montage on to the USB stick. (The Montage is seeing the USB device - I formatted it on the Montage). And when booting normally, it appears in Utility / Contents
Yes, to confirm, I have copied the 8N700S_.PGM file, without renaming it.
I've also downloaded the OS update a second time, in case the first download was corrupted.
Have also tried several USB devices.

The file 8N70OS_.PGM most be in the root directory of your USB stick.
Yep, it is. The only file on the USB device.
Also, FYI have gotten a sound set from Easy Sounds, and it loaded fine.
What firmware us your instrument currently?
1.01.0
I have now succeed in updating the firmware to ver. 1.10.6
Purchased another USB drive, which worked. 🙂
Strange since you said: "Have also tried several USB devices."
If it works with 1/10 of every USB Device, I hope the update it self encreases compatibility.
What USB Device did it work with?
I went to the Yamaha verified USB drive list posted on the Yamaha site. The SAMSUNG USB 3.0 MUF-32BB has been confirmed as compatible by Yamaha. I got this one because some complaints on the 2.0s are that they are too slow. Although Yamaha has a disclaimer at the bottom of the page that these still might not function properly in Montage. What's the point in making a list of products that work but then state that they might not work. Basically means that they really didn't test any of them thoroughly. I'll report back whether the SAMSUNG actually works for the OS update. BTW which one didn't work and which one did work. That information is actually helpful. Also, a list of those drives that don't work would be helpful.
Those listed on the site have been tested. That's why they're listed. Yamaha cannot guarantee that the manufacturer of the device will continue making the drive in the exact same manner - or that the one you buy is not damaged, obviously. So any drive that is listed was verified at the time of the test and can reasonably be expected to work.
The original poster in this thread did not specify what type of drive they used. We appreciate people reporting back, but please test them on a Montage before recommending any particular device.
And what you heard about "some complaints" about speed, are hearsay at best, and meaningless without any support of test results. Compared to what?
In general, USB sticks come formatted and ready to use. Avoid those with pre installed Copy Protection software built-in, this usually translates to Music Prevention. There is nothing extraordinary about USB Flash drives. Worries begin when getting drives that are too big. Thinking you need a TerraByte or anywhere near that amount is, at the least, optimistic, and at best, is way overkill.
My Montage came today. Does the manual walk you through the firmware update? Thanks
No. The instructions, included with the downloaded firmware, walk you through the update.
Ok, the instructions say to format the USB drive on the Montage first. Do I do this in utility? Thanks
