So, I've spent most of the day with the Montage 8 in my studio. At one point my wife came in, and as I'm sitting at the keyboard, starts telling me about how her day has gone. Then . . .

Her: Is this a new keyboard?

Me: Um, ah

Her: It has that large throbbing thing. That big thing - that wasn't there before. That's new.

Me: D'oh! (Immediately putting my hand over the Super Knob, to hide it). I can make it stop throbbing.

Her: It's a new keyboard.

So, outed by the Super Knob. She wouldn't have noticed anything else other than that. Yanno, minor details like touch screen, lights everywhere.

I can't make this stuff up.

So, be warned.

My wife wouldn't complain if my knob was throbbing.
She'd probably faint though.

One more reason for Yamaha to replace that "super knob" with a 3rd wheel on the next version of the Montage.

I believe that musicians do not need to see a blinking toyish "super knob" marketing artifact to fully understand that Yamaha have done a great job in providing very well thought out control features on the Montage synth.

Deactivate the light. And pretend it's not there. Problem solved.

Maybe she'd turn it to see how it changed the sound... 🙂

The blinking can easily be turned off. I do find the POSITION of the Super Knob much more convenient than the position of the Mod Wheel. I don't think three wheels, at least in the traditional left hand end of the keys would be an improvement.

Tonight my wife asked me if I'm keeping "that latest keyboard in my studio or if it's temporary?"

Um, keeping it dear, for shizzle!

I warned the missus a month in advance a new keyboard was coming, but I was caught once sneaking one down the back stairs.

I actually like the colored knob. I do turn off the flashing and turn down the brightness to 32, but I think it adds a nice splash of color to the black panel and the fuzzed out finish gives it a nice soft look that goes well with the display. It's tastefully done; I like it.

I would like to be able to lock the color Type however rather than have it always selected at a performance level. My preference is Type 1 or Type 3-2.
