Hi,
I have a Montage 7, which i use as my sound card to go to logic Pro X, and outputs go to some Mackie HR824s .
My question : when i record via usb audio to my logic pro, does the signal go thru the PAC converters before the recording by logic ?
If it doesn't go thru, is it interesting to use analog outputs of the montage, then route it in the A/D input, and then in the logic pro, to better the sound, for recording (as the montage sounds won't always be heard via my montage outputs) ?
Is it interesting too, to use analog outputs to some preamps like avalon, and then to A/D input and then into logic pro ?

Thank you !

Alex

PAC is all about analog. The digital outputs do not go through PAC. The digital signal is sent parallel to the PAC circuit and also to the digital outputs. As far as what to do - there are no rules. You can use the analog outputs and feed this into an analog-to-digital interface to capture the sound with extra coloring from the analog output and interconnect. Or you can go out analog to more analog stages, like tape/etc, before digitizing. Or straight out to digital. Use what sounds best, to your ears, to accomplish your "vision". Different projects may pull for different combinations of approaches. Signature sounds are derived from breaking the rules, or using certain setups as "go to".

There's another thread covering this same subject - but I couldn't find it. My approach would be to capture everything to digital in the pre-master stage since passing through analog or additional filters can always be added. However, they cannot be removed. Rough mix or quick-and-dirty can use anything. Sometimes it isn't "worth" going through the hassle of keeping everything clean and "sterile" until final mixdown. Extra steps and effort.

Thank you Jason !
I'm at point where i have to make my "vision" clearer , and sound is an important part... arrangements less crowded, and sound with more character...

Maybe the pure sounds of montage with some extra-life with external FX or treatments 😉

PAC also deals with only left and right. So it makes sense to use PAC as the final stereo mix stage if you're going to sample an analog circuit as your "final" mix (or slightly post-process with other effects).
