The User Bank into which a newly created sound is stored is determined by the Bank from which the Primary Part is taken - the finished item will be stored in that same User area. That's OK. But a particular mix I've been working on has turned out differently to what I had originally envisaged, and I'd like it stored under 'Piano' and not 'Pad/Choir' as it is now. Don't see how to do this? I'm not keen on experiment, as the time spent is considerable, and as with all these things, the result of attempting to duplicate it may not be successful. So, is there a way of either making the Piano sound the Primary Part (currently #3) or moving the Performance to another sector, please?
You have 2 options
1. You can exchange Part 3 for Part 1 by selecting either part and then use the Exchange function of the Copy/Exchange page that you call up by pressing Copy.
2. You can also change the category of Part 1 to whatever you wish. Select the part then Edit. Part Settings - General and on that page you can assign the Part Category Main and Sub.
Also don't be afraid to experiment - by saving any changes as a new performance if you don't like what you ended up with or things went wrong you still have the original performance intact.
I see what you mean, Rod. On this side my custom user performances have sometimes started with some other performance and "morphed" into something else. For instance, there's a user performance I've made that always shows up under the Piano category.
It's not really ever a piano - and this has been a slight annoyance but not big enough to dig.
I didn't realize that the category of the performance was based off the part 1 category. I did look at the top-level "edit - common/audio" (one level above PART) configuration items and category is not part of that - where I would think it would otherwise more intuitively belong.
There is the Tg flag here (AWM, FM-X, or both) and the MC flag (Off or On). Seems like performance categories would be reasonable to place here - to keep the parts free from having any effect as you swap them or change them.
However, not exactly the end of the world given you can manually assign the category once you understand how it works.
Thanks for sharing.

Part 1 is the Performance's anchor. This becomes clearer when you start to realize that 'there can be only one' Multi Part playable program in the Montage. All the other Parts (slots) not involved in that one Multi Part entity are selectable as individual Parts.
When you "merge" Performances, they become one. Up to a maximum of eight Parts can be "merged" into a playable program. Part 1 is always active, and acts as the anchor for the Multi Part playable program.
Once you accept this it makes perfect sense for it to be the Part that contains the CATEGORY and SUB CATEGORY listing.
The one Multi Part playable program starts always at Part 1 - any of the slots 2-8 can become apart of this program when KBD CTRL is active for that Part.
KBD CTRL is placing several Parts together for simultaneous triggering.
Thank you Phil. Tried both options - option 1 is best and the tidiest - but neither option put my new Performance in the 'Piano' Bank. Despite Part 1 now being a Piano Part, it remained stubbornly in the 'Pad/Choir' Bank. Then it reverted. I'd missed something, so did it all again ... light bulb moment ... surely I'd have to save it? Well, 'Store' in Montage-speak. It's what I mean by experts writing the words ... 'everyone knows that' ... so 'Store' and Eureka! Safely in the 'Piano' Bank ...
Jason, I'm a bit of a control freak. I like things to be where they should be - or, more accurately, where I think they should be. Hence my moan, now happily resolved so I can get on and find more things to moan about. I must say though, that I read some of the questions on this Forum, and am totally baffled as to what the questioner is on about! Way over my head, so at least I know I can never tire of the Montage ... !
Thank you Bad Mister - your explanation confirmed what I thought was the case, but unless it's confirmed by someone who knows, I'm never certain! As you say, it is logical, but thankfully, not immutable! Caters for scatterwits like me - Yamaha people evidently live in the real world!
I would use the user bank to cut out the presets. Press [CATEGORY SEARCH] 3 times. Then press the PART/[COMMON] button (button just below LIVE SET) to display All categories.
I do understand the head scratching since, here, Montage will generally keep the filter the same as the last category search you did. Pressing the PART/[COMMON] button is fairly second nature now - so no more head scratching or frustration since it doesn't take long to press.
