Yamaha offers a wireless MIDI bluetooth transmitter device. The ROLI Rise is also bluetooth wireless MIDI enabled and class compliant. Has anyone attempted to use a ROLI to control your Montage or other synth. with good results either wired or wireless?
I'd especially like to use the Roli with my analog Matrixbrute to take advantage of 5 dimensions of control.
I've received feedback that these MIDI devices will connect the Roli (without a computer) to your standard MIDI interface. I'm waiting to see if the Yamaha Wireless 5-PIN DIN MIDI MD-BT01 Adapter will work.

This was done wired via a computer (raspberry pi for portability) rather than using a direct connection though. There are a couple of reasons why you might want to go via a computer.
First, and most annoyingly, the Seaboard doesn't reset the aftertouch when starting a new note so you can get 'pings' when you press a new note and it starts with the AT value of the previous one. This is particularly annoying when playing very softly and legato - which I like to do on the Roli. You can get round this in software of course.
Secondly, the Seaboard has 'slide' mapped unalterably to CC 74 (brightness). which is a good default (it changes the filter cutoff) but sometimes I want it to do other things.
Thanks. I'll give that a view. What exactly happens if you use the stock performances in Montage on the ROLI? Or can't you also tweak them to work?
I know ROLI is making their own synth in the Grand to take advantage of the 5D functionality but Yamaha's existing sounds are so amazing that I'd like to adapt them to the ROLI.
Also, can't the super knob now be mapped so that the ROLI can control it?
When you connect the computer, ROLI and Montage, what program is managing these? Is it the ROLI computer software?

I recently got a Roli seaboard 25 and tried the settings Chrissie suggested in the video. The glide doesn't seem to work properly with the pitch bend range -12 to +12 i.e. you can glide but it doesn't glide as far as the note you have moved your finger to. e.g. if I slide from D to A, the note playing is not an A, but somewhere in between D and A, depending on the pitch bend range.
I think it needs a range -48 to +48 to match the keyboard. But the Montage only allows -48 to +24.
Just wondering if other Roli users experienced this same issue?
Which "D" and which "A"? Some arbitrary "D" to the next "A" going up the scale:
D, D#(1), E(2), F(3), F#(4), G(5), G#(6), A(7)
... is only 7 semi-tones away. So not sure where +48 would come in for those sets of notes.
I think I'm just missing which "D" and which "A" you are referencing.
... or, really the issue is just Roli is setup for +/-48 and Montage is not matching - so you're using metric system on Montage and SAE on Roli which doesn't match up. Better to just align the two ranges.
BTW: you can change Roli's range too to match Montage. So setting the pitch bend range (on Roli) to +/-24 should do it.

Sorry I wasn't clearer. Yes, I was talking about the notes D to A, in any octave.
That aside, you were spot on about matching the pitch bend in the Roli settings with the pitch bend range in the performance. The Roli had defaulted to 48, so that's why the Montage performance needed to be the same. I changed the Roli to 24 and matched that in the performance and it all works as expected.

I use Roli to trigger my MODX8 in my gigs.
The setup is the following: I use Cubase on a special dedicated PC for live concerts to trigger bases and manage audiovisuals and lights (all from Cubase), so I plug Roli as a Midi Input by USB and MODX-8 also connected to PC by USB as an External Instrument. After that I configure the Roli as a Midi Input for my MODX, and that's it.
Here you are a video using the Roli to trigger a performance on MODX. On 4:45 aprox you can see it.

The MIDI implementation chart implies polyphonic (key after touch) is not recognized by the Montage. Although this is not necessary for the Roli necessarily because one use of the Roli is to send each note on its own channel - so channel aftertouch (non-polyphonic) is sufficient. Montage needs to be in Multi-Channel MIDI mode.
The video already linked in this thread itself details setup for using Roli where "brightness" (MIDI CC) is one dimension of gesture. Volume is another dimension which relies on channel pressure (channel after touch) and pitch bend controls pitch.
Although I'm sure key after touch can be used w/Roli - it's not necessary.

Are you deliberately obfuscating the enormous limitations of using something that's specifically designed to be a polyphonic aftertouch super controller to drive a device that doesn't comprehend it, or do you just write in this manner by default?
I'm transparently communicating the limitations of Montage/MODX while pointing out that there is not an absolute dependence on polyphonic aftertouch due to the flexibility of the Roli device in application.
I don't have a Roli - but the few that do that post here have communicated success without laboring on what cannot be done so I adopt the "spirit" of those who have more experience with the two devices.
