Where's the Montage? 🙂

That's my lab equipment. I need to take an updated picture of my recording studio (aka PlayPen) with the Montage.

Hi Walt, the "control (Pedal) serving as a control of the controller (Super Knob) which controls the Rotary Controls which control synth parameters" is an important issue as well, since it allows a simple CC to Control a SysEx-based Rotary Knob. This is practical and important, since DAWs are nicer when it comes to editing CC curves rather than SysEx. I am sure I could handle that. My desire was very simple one—my apologies for that. If I can enjoy the realtime tweaking of those lovely presets, will also want my DAW to record, edit and playback what I play. And this inevitably desirable thing is what a "Montage connected to a DAW" refuses to do by default. The Quick Setup > "MIDI Rec on DAW" and the like exactly do not offer that. You will have to make the DAW return the Knob-commands back to the sound engine of the Montage in order to fulfill the simple-most demand: Rec, Edit and Play of whatever you touch on the instrument (like with every instruments where the hardware is sending some CC). I am looking forward to more elegant solutions than mine.

Jan-Friedrich,

You are most excellent at explaining something crisp and to the point. If I had simply said "
....the "control (Pedal) serving as a control of the controller (Super Knob) which controls the Rotary Controls which control synth parameters" is an important issue as well, since it allows a simple CC to Control a SysEx-based Rotary Knob.", maybe Bad Mister would have better understood what I was trying to achieve.

Thanks for clarifying it.

Sorry, we did get a bit off topic. My bad, there has just been a little confusion about the Super Knob and the Assignable Knobs, and the parameters they control. I was explaining something, that Walt already understood... It should totally be possible to control the movement of the super knob with cc... That, in fact, is very useful.

Phil I realize that when your dealing with a lot of people and many different issues sometimes there is some confusion. I don't care what everybody says, I think you're doing a great job! 😉

I don't understand your statement though "It should totally be possible to control the movement of the super knob with cc.." Are you saying that you also agree that this would be a useful feature, or it IS possible to control the movement of the super knob with a MIDI CC? I believe it's the former, but If the latter, what cc do you use?

Thanks for your help and have a great weekend!

Thank you all; @Bad Mister: Yes, it seems to be the case that Logic is not echoing the SysEx via "USB MIDI Through" although the SysEx In is not disengaged. The "How-To-Manual" will need a workaround for this. A parallely wired Multi Instrument (with notes and controllers being filtered out in order to avoid double events) might be the proper solution.

I'll report back as soon as I hear. I don't know Logic Pro that well to just answer. If the Sysex In is not disengaged then Logic Pro should be recording it, but it still could be preventing the Sysex messages from passing Thru, which I'm sure is just a setting. Check the documentation. Verify by recording some movement - even though it may appear not to move, record it, and see if the knob animates on playback. Let us know.

@ Walt
Currently, it is possible to move any of the Part AssignKnobs 1-8, using cc017-024, respectively, from an external controller... They each can be assigned to multiple locations within the Montage... Doing one thing in Part 1 while doing entirely different things in Parts 2-8. So external control over the Super Knob could certainly be implemented (it currently is not, however). But as you realize, editing the Super Knob movement may or may not address the specific parameter you want to address alone, it's a multiple destination control. So editing the stream of data generated by the Super Knob, edits multiple destinations (necessarily). Not what you want if you need to correct just one thing among the ganged parameters.

I finally found the solution for this issue (and should have found it earlier, I am to blame because I should have known Logic better):

• In the Project Setting > MIDI check "MIDI Thru for SysEx"
• use a Multi Instrument set to "Montage Port 1" and do not use "Plug-In for External MIDI Instrument".

All other MIDI filters are default to let SysEx pass.

It took me a while because I had to learn that Montage uses SysEx and I had to recognize the command type correctly in Logic's MIDI Monitor.

Thank you and sorry for the german in the screenshot.
