Turn Off The Blinking Super Knob!

I requested this feature a while ago, and I'd like to suggest it again because it's something I would really love to have on the Montage.

The Super Knob is a great feature, and I enjoy many things about it including its ability to change its color. When I'm playing a song, having it blink in time with the tempo is really useful. But when I'm not playing music, the blinking drives me crazy. And it's enough of a pain in the rear end to turn the blinking on and off via the touchscreen user interface that it's too much trouble for me to keep doing that. So I leave the blinking turned off all the time.

What I would like to see in some future update is a MIDI message (SysEx or CC or anything else that could work) that Cubase could send to the Montage to turn the Super Knob blinking on and off. I know this must be possible because there is already a SysEx message that can turn the Super Knob's light on and off.

I suspect that it wouldn't take a Yamaha software engineer more than a few hours to implement this feature. Please send this on to the team responsible for adding features to the Montage.

Thanks.

The following two lines of Sysex should do the trick. Simply place these at the end of each Cubase song.

F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 30 40 2C 00 05 F7
F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 30 4B 11 10 F7

I'm not sure this line matters: F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 30 4B 11 10 F7

I was going to suggest cranking the tempo all the way down, which is what the 1st line does

F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 30 40 2C 00 05 F7

It doesn't exactly stop the blinking - but it slows it to a crawl.

Depending on what you're doing, you may need to reset the tempo. Tempo, in general, may be easier to get to than other settings because there's a quick menu key to get to it: [SHIFT] + [ENTER]

Thought perhaps the tempo trick wasn't exactly what you were looking for, but maybe it works for you.

The "tempo trick" is but half of the solution; I also added the selection of Super Knob TYPE 11 which does a subtle change in hue from light through several shades of a single color. It totally removes the eye-grabbing blink-blink-blinking that I think is bothersome to some folks.

Since the request was for a Cubase solution, no Manual reset in Tempo needs to be involved, since loading or selecting the next Project will automatically reset the Tempo and recall the stored Super Knob TYPE when you open the Project.

When using Cubase w/Montage Connect active, you do not have to Store a Performance in the USER Bank of the hardware Montage. When you open the Cubase Project, if Auto Sync is active, the Performance is immediately sent to the Montage edit buffer.

Type 6 seems even more subtle.

On the other end of the spectrum - type 5-2 is the least subtle with the strobe effect. With the exception of 5-2, 6, and 11 - they all go from off to some color back to off. 5-2 is a wacky strobe and 6 and 11 do not turn off. So avoiding 5-2, at 6 seconds to turn on and 6 seconds to turn off - it may not matter what pattern is used as a 12-second cycle may no longer be perceived as blinking.

I thought it was instructive to break down the solution into the components of what it did.

Replacing the 2nd command with:

F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 30 4B 11 09 F7

(Selecting pattern 6) may work just as well for some.

And replacing "09" with anything other than 08 may work for others as well.

... still, it's a workaround that doesn't allow for any "blink=off" color to be used if the slow pulse is not desired. So there is still a point to allowing SYSEX controll of the blink=on/off perhaps for some. Hopefully one of the two "morph" patterns works.

That's clever, slowing the tempo down so much that the blinking becomes a gentle pulsation. It makes the Montage look like it has a beating heart, which is very cool.

But it only works when Utility -- Tempo Settings -- MIDI Sync is set to "Internal." When MIDI Sync is set that way, Cubase 9 Pro does not seem to be able to control the Montage's tempo.

I've always had MIDI Sync set to "MIDI" when I'm using Cubase with the Montage to enable Cubase's control of the Montage tempo. But then this SysEx tempo method doesn't work.

So while I admire the ingenuity of this tempo method, I still think it would be better and easier if Yamaha would just give us a way to directly turn Super Knob blinking on and off.

... "but maybe it works for you" - because it's not equivalent. I think there's still a good point to adding the feature - although my "fix" (for my own board) is to leave superknob blink off at all times.

Some more SysEx to throw at it (select which ones do what you want)

F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 00 05 0C 01 F7 - MIDI CLK OUT On
F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 00 05 0B 01 F7 - MIDI CLK MIDI (ext)
..
F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 00 05 0B 00 F7 - MIDI CLK Internal
F0 43 10 7F 1C 02 00 05 0C 01 F7 - MIDI CLK OUT Off

I don't have Cubase 9 Pro - so I'm sure I don't have Cubase script available to me. I'm thinking that scripts can be linked to start and stop commands to throw sysex out during these events so you can force-feed Montage the mode you want to get the clock set (tempo) then yank the rug out by changing the sync mode and hopefully the setting sticks.

I hadn't realized you could adjust the MIDI CLK settings via SysEx. That's good to know.

I searched for "MIDI Clock" in the data list. Brought me right to it.

I was able to temporarily turn off the flashing LED according to Phil's instructions in his Montage Part 1 superknob tutorial.. How do I save that as the default status for all voices/performances?

Press [UTILITY]
Touch “Settings” > “System”
Here you can turn Super Knob flashing to Off and dim the brightness to 0
