Hello people - sorry for my ill-considered outburst on the previous topic! I have now formatted a new USB on the Montage, and copied across just the 8N700S_.PGM file as per instructions. Switched off the Montage, plugged in the USB, held down both the 'Cursor Up' and 'Utility' buttons, and switched on. The instructions say to hold the buttons down until the 'Yamaha' logo appears.

The snag is - it doesn't appear. It sticks at the 'Montage' screen. I've switched off again and repeated twice - still the logo doesn't appear. How long should it take for the logo to appear, please? I held the buttons down for 1 minute - does it take longer?

A secondary question to be sure - when formatting the USB, I pressed the 'Format' button and re-named the USB and confirmed the Format, the screen showed a blue hollow circle which did not move, and went off in a couple of seconds - there was no advice about 'complete' or anything, it just went off. Is that correct?

Thanks!

A bit more on this - I have just tried again, removing the USB and plugging it back in, holding down Cursor Up and Utility, and switching on. Again just the Montage screen, but a black box appeared that said 'Searching for the updater' and advice underneath to ''Press inc/yes to retry' ... did that (several times) but nothing happened, so evidently the Montage can't find the USB. Which makes me wonder about the efficacy of the Format itself. But going into Utility - Contents - Load shows a USB drive is present. Huh?

The instruction said : "No other files should be present on the USB flash drive" Did you do that?
I bought the Montage yesterday , waiting for the shipment, should be home about this weekend, I am not sure what OS version it had? I sounds like update the OS is the painful process

I successfully did the update with no problems.

Yes when formatting the usb drive on the Montage, the screen just showed a circle and then it went off very fast, was surprised that it took such a short time to format my 8gb stick.

After formatting i plugged the usb stick to my pc and copied just the pgm file in, plug it back to the Montage while it was still turned on. Then i followed the instruction, shut down the Montage, press those 2 buttons and power on. The update went smoothly.

Perhaps you may wish to try downloading the firmware file again and try another usb stick.

Oh ya, i had to wait quite long when it showed the black box with the words 'searching for updater'.

Hello Tho and Jeremy - yes, I copied just the 8N700S_PGM file to a new, Montage formatted USB. However, I notice than the file on the USB is named as 8N700S_ without the PGM on the end - I wonder if that's the problem? How could it copy without that? Anyway, I'll delete the file altogether, and start again ... more later ... well done Jeremy, I'm sure it's only me - I'm prone to falling into every trap ever devised by Man ...

OK, I'm back. S i SAID, i STARTED FROM SCRATCH, DOWNLOADING THE UPDATE FROM yAMAHA AGAI

OK, I'm back. As I said, I downloaded the whole update again from Yamaha, and extracted it (via WinRAR) to a USB. The update itself appeared on the USB as '8N700S_' and not '8N700S_.PGM' as per download, so I changed it to read the latter (not forgetting the dot before PGM). I then copied the file (368,640K) to a virgin Montage formatted USB, but noticed the name I had been invited to give the file when I formatted the USB was there as a separate empty folder, so I deleted that to leave nothing but the update file, naked and unadorned.

Full of hope, I went through the specified routine yet again - and yet again came up zilch. A black box telling me it was searching for the updater (there was what looked like 'NG' in dark red after it) and saying to press inc/yes to re-try. Which I did. Several times. Zilch. So now I'm stumped. The USB stick itself is OK, as it had had all the files on it, and all but the update worked fine. I then deleted all those. But this time I only copied the update to it. Nothing else.

What have I ever done to Yamaha? Been a good customer over many years, but they sure got it in for me ...

Rod - you mention that the updater file on the USB is not showing the file extension (PGM) . If you are using a pc as opposed to a mac do you maybe have the folder option on the pc set to hide extensions? I looked at mine and the file on the USB is shown as. PGM until I change the folder option view to Hide Extensions at which point the PGM is not shown. If that is the case for you then by altering the file name the montage will probably not be able to recognise it. There shouldn't be any need for you to add anything to the file name on the USB.

You also mention that there is an empty folder showing on the USB - is that showing when you open the USB on your computer? The USB stick should be completely empty. I would erase anything that is on the stick, then copy the extracted PGM file to it (without making any alterations to it) and then try again.

I think Phil is right: What I think happened was the extension .PGM was there and you may have ended up naming it 8N70OS_.PGM.PGM. I have seen this happen a few times and it won't update.

Phils suggestion above is good advice: Just copy the extracted file without altering it and try again.

Also, try a different USB drive if that doesn't work.

you're not the only one, I also had issues. the update just would not start. tried several times, then it finally started. once it finally was in the "searching for update" mode I didn' t worry anymore and just let it do it's thing. don't know if there was a "try again" option when it was searching for the update, I never looked. maybe just wait a while and see what happens.

Hello Phil and Bangelos - smack on! Sure enough, extensions were turned off, so the file was .PGM.PGM ... Doh! So I blithely erased everything and once again downloaded the update, copied the 8N700S file and rushed off, completely confident that you guys had solved the problem! Even though I knew I'd tried before adding the extension myself - you guessed it! Zilch! Then, out of nowhere a nasty little niggle sprang up ... the USB I had bought especially for the Montage was a Verbatim Store'n'Go 16Gb (thinking lots of space) BUT, many years ago I had a problem much the same, and the reason was that these Store'n'Go sticks have a little program built into them you never know is there. The thing wasn't empty when I bought it. Maybe that was the problem. Did it all again with a bog-standard 2Gb stick - and Bingo! The Montage found the updater immediately, told me what it was doing, and did it. I am now v1.20. It was the requirement to be empty save the update that just won't work with Verbatim Store'n'Go USB sticks - it's probably in Yamaha's compatibility list somewhere. So Peace reigns once more. Thanks to all for patience and expertise once again. This Forum has to rank #1 for sheer helpfulness ...

The sticks with multiple partitions are likely causing issues. In order to fix these sticks you can do a full erase using instructions here (assuming a windows PC):

http://www.howtogeek.com/235824/how-to-clean-a-flash-drive-sd-card-or-internal-drive-to-fix-partition-and-capacity-problems/

Doing a search on removing partitions can land you in the right area of the net to arrive at a solution.

Since I come from very old legacy keyboard hardware which doesn't recognize larger USB sticks - I generally purchase the smallest USB I can find with no frills. Therefore, my current Montage stick is a 4GB stick. Also, since the Montage is USB 2.0 (not 3.0) I made sure to steer clear from USB 3.0 if, for no other reason, it's an extra premium which does not benefit the Montage [even if it does make transfer to the PC, which does have USB 3.0, faster].

It's generally good advice to use the lowest common denominator when getting USB sticks for keyboards (example as USB version above). Since the largest memory chunk in the Montage is 1.75GB - I would stick to a size which is as close to 2GB as can be sourced. For me, this was 4GB.

Hello Jason - I assumed that formatting removed everything, but it obviously doesn't, and that's what rang a faint bell from long ago. I have wondered why the on-board memory is so small - 1.75Gb is miniscule these days - but Yamaha have always been niggardly with it. Would you believe 3Mb on my Tyros 3? I guess the basic architecture was fixed about 1987 ... but it's not a big problem using USB(2) sticks. I'd have expected two USB ports though - I keep source material on one, and derived material on the other on the Tyros, and can freely swap between them and the on-board memory, which I miss on the Montage.

There's other summaries about memory and how USB sticks may not be the same as waveform memory. Take the latest processor from Intel, for example. It has close to 8MB of L3 cache (which is memory). Why can't Intel just release a CPU with 256GB of L3 cache - I mean my phone can use a 256GB microsd. The answer is that the memory is not the same and has different objectives. The larger is more general purpose, slower, wears out faster, etc. The analogy doesn't exactly hold up when you get into the nitty gritty of dynamic vs. static - but the general idea holds. I understand the argument of "... but XYZ company is doing it with ABC more gigs through LMNOP interface". This is a marketing issue more than anything else. The sound of the instrument is not something I hear many complaints about - at least not that more memory capacity would fix.

For formatting:

Formatting comes after partitioning - so if your stick is already partitioned, then you'll just wipe clean the partition that maps out as the drive you're formatting. Doing an erase operation that wipes the partitions is what is needed and there are various tools for accomplishing this. For me the easiest way is to spend a few dollars on a low capacity new USB stick.

I haven't checked what happens when you stick two USB sticks on a USB hub - but a hub does give you more ports.

Hi all,
as a blind user I had no problems with thedownload.
Copying the file was no problem too.
And installing from my USB-Drive was well. It is an Motif XF formated stick.
I hope You get it work.
If someone is blind and reading this. You can use the KNFB Reader with Your smartphone like the iPhone to read if the procedure ist finish. I read that out with my iPhone.
All the best
Rainer
