Working With Cubase

I just set up a Cubase project with a MIDI track and figured out how to route the output to my Montage. The output drop-down menu lists three alternatives: MONTAGE-1, MONTAGE-2, MONTAGE-3. Why are there three of these? Is it so that I could hook up three Montages at once to my PC (why would I want to do this, even if I actually had won the lottery)? If not, what's the reason?

Also, since we don't have a VST editor for the Montage yet, I'm wondering about the best way to manage projects in the meantime. I'm assuming the Montage settings won't be stored in the Cubase project file, so I guess what I'll do is save the Montage settings in the Montage version of a Motif XF "all" file and then perhaps store that file somewhere in the Cubase project folder to keep things all in the same place.

But this is the first day I've had time to do anything significant with my Montage, and I'd love to hear from people more expert than me about whether I'm thinking about this the right way, or if there's a better way to do things.

Helle for midi port you have some informations in the Owners Manual page in section "Using Connected Computer"

Port 1
The tone generator block in this instrument can recognize and use only this port. When playing the MONTAGE as a tone generator from the external MIDI instrument or computer, you should set the MIDI Port to 1 on the connected MIDI device or computer.

Port 3
This port is used as the MIDI Thru Port. The MIDI data received over Port 3 via the [USB TO HOST] terminal will be re-transmitted to an external MIDI device via the MIDI [OUT] terminal.
The MIDI data received over Port 3 via the MIDI [IN] terminal will be re-transmitted to an external device (computer, etc.) via the [USB TO HOST] terminal. When
using a USB connection, make sure to match the MIDI transmit port and the MIDI receive port as well as the MIDI transmit channel and the MIDI receive channel. Make sure to set the MIDI port of the external device connected to this instrument according to the above information.

You can save a "template" of your settings in Cubase File > Save as Template.
It's allow you to save your settings and have a "Montage template" for your Montage record.

MONTAGE-1, MONTAGE-2 and MONTAGE-3 are indeed your MIDI ports (each Port is 16 channels coming and going) and as posted above... Port 1 addresses the Montage tone engine. Port 2 is not used. Port 3 is used for an external device connect to the 5-pin jacks on the Montage back panel. (same as it was on the Motif XF... these are your MIDI ports). If and when you hit the lottery or when the VST tool is ready, you will see the number of instances of Montage listed with the number out front (same as with the Motif XF): 1-MONTAGE, 2-MONTAGE and so on... When you have a VSTi routing situation, you can have as many instances of the instrument as you CPU can handle... this works in conjunction with the FREEZE function. FREEZE allows you to create temporary audio files that playback instead of the computer or hardware having to generate the audio in real time, the temporary audio file plays back (the MIDI data is placed in a folder and is muted).

Store your Montage setup in the Montage. You do so by pressing the [STORE] button as selecting "Store as new Performance" or if you update an already stored Performance, "Overwrite current Performance".

Name it the title of the Project. For a safety: back it up to a USB stick by saving a "USER FILE"

Thank you for this clear explanation Phill, to complete my part for Michael, Cubase template save the configuration of your project with each of your tracks settings in "Inspector" (so USB port settings, midi channel ......).
You can use this template like a way to start for each new project you want to done with the Montage.

Like Phill explain, save your performance in the Montage, cause performance common/part .... data will not been saved in Cubase project.
