I'm trying to use the Motif VST with Cubase 8 but it either crashes Cubase or playback is very erratic eventually leading to a freeze/crash. Things were working OK on Cubase 7.5

Does Yamaha have an idea how long before Cubase and the Motif VST plugin will be compatible?

There is a known issue between the current Yamaha Extensions (VST Assistant) and Cubase Pro 8. A update is in the works. When it is released you will find the Extension (and/or Version) update at the official download site:
download.yamaha.com

You can still use the Editor version 1.6.x as a Standalone, (the Editor works fine) with all the advantages of VSTi routing... Including FREEZE, EXPORT AUDIO MIXDOWN, and AUTOMATION. You do so by setting up your Yamaha Motif XF as an EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT.

This External Instrument VST Plug-in setup is outlined in detail here on YamahaSynth in the following article:

Cubase Pro 8 Workaround for Yamaha VST Editor Users

Are you using the FW expansion or an external audio interface?

I don't have the FW expansion, I'm using an UR28m interface.

On the DEVICES > VST CONNECTIONS > EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT tab you would select the AUDIO DEVICE = Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO and set the DEVICE PORTs to the two channels you connect the analog main outputs of your Motif XF (probably the UR28m's ports 3 and 4.

If you don't mind me chiming in . . . In my studio, I'm using Cubase 7.5, with a Motif XS and the VST editor, along with the FW expansion. (the setup kicks ass). I've purchased Cubase 8 and have it on my laptop for now, but it will eventually be in my main rig in my studio.

I just read Bad Mister's fine article mentioned about about the workaround, and for anyone using a similar rig as mine, his article mentions a pretty significant advantage of using the standalone version of the VST Editor.

That advantage is that you can actually setup MONO audio busses for particular patches . . (like drums, as he mentions) . . . . bass, woodwind things, or others. HMMM . . . cool!

I'm actually considering giving this (stand alone version) a try in my present rig - - even before install C8!

Thank you again Bad Mister.

I can live with this workaround until the plugin is updated.

MIDI synchronization error is solved in updating Cubase Pro to version 8.0.10. Now everything is working properly !!!

Apparently, there was nothing wrong with the most recent Yamaha Editors nor the Yamaha Extensions - no update was necessary. Thankfully all seems to be corrected with the release of Cubase Pro 8.0.10. The External Instrument routing setup (link provided in my first post in this thread) is still a viable way to work; especially for those Motif XF users with the FW16E expansion board installed. It allows you to configure mono and/or odd/even stereo pairings when necessary, yet lets you take advantage of all the feature/benefits of the Editor, the Sound Browser and VST Routing (including processing with computer-based plugins, Automation, Freeze, and Export Audio Mixdown).
