Yes, it is possible. To get started, please see the Chapter "Recording in the Performance Mode" page 31 in the Owner's Manual. If you get stuck or have specific questions, post back here.
Basically, select your Performance
Press [RECORD]
Set the target parameters in the Record Setup screen
And PLAY...

Typically, MIDI sequencers are designed to record one track at a time (sequentially), one after the other. Since the XF engine can host four simultaneous Arpeggiators, and since you can freely assign ARPEGGIATORs to any or all of the four Parts of a PERFORMANCE, Yamaha developed the direct Performance Record routine. This routine allows you to "jump start" your composition, by recording multiple tracks (4) at one time.

Most PERFORMANCES can be documented directly to the sequencer as MIDI data following the direct Performance Record routine as described in the Manual. However, some Arpeggio Types cannot easily be recorded as MIDI (due to the assigned KEY MODE), in such an instance you can record your real time play directly to the XF's Integrated Sampling Sequencer (ISS) as Audio. While this is a bit more advanced, it exists as a possibility when "hybrid" and "velocity zoned" arpeggio types are involved.
