I'm looking for some advice to either buy the Yamaha WX5 or Akai EWI.

- Which one is better to integrate with my MOTIF XF
- Can I connect WX5 or EWI to the MOTIF and then dispatch the MIDI signal from WX5 to MOTIF and then to the computer through USB or FW? or I should directly connect the wind controller to my mac?
- Where/How can I purchase WX5 in Canada?

WIND CONTROLLER AND MOTIF XF

They are two very different devices - to outsiders they are both wind controllers. But to players the differences are dramatic. You will need to decide for yourself which addresses control over synth sounds in the most intuitive way for you.

The WX5 has a reed that functions like an acoustic reed (not in vibrations) in how you control pitch with your embouchure - some players find this compelling. You'll need to check it out yourself.

The typical setup would be to send MIDI In to the DAW and then direct signal to the tone generator. The both work pretty much the same in generating data - MIDI data is standard. What's different is how they player interacts with the controller... and that you must answer for yourself.

Contact Yamaha Canada. (contact info is on the last page of your Owner's Manual).

Thanks Phil. It's not available in Canada. I purchased a second hand unit and it's great! It just amazes me why Yamaha hasn't made the next version yet?!

The first WX (WX7) dates back to 1987 so WX's have had a good run. It is, or was, a fabulous controller.

I've used a WX7 with bands since 1988, first with the Roland MT32, the sound canvas and more recently with the Yamaha Motif ES and XF keyboards, works perfectly. DGJ
