Hi, I am new to this so please pardon my newbie question. My wife and I just purchased an MOXF8 that she will primarily play through our sound system at church. Is it possible to connect to my home stereo to practice or would we have to purchase an amplifier? If you can, would I go from the Output connections or the Phones connection to an input on the stereo? Thanks, Jay
The honest answer to this question is... yes you can play your MOXF8 through your home stereo system, but there are reasons most folks don't do this. (I'm sure you've already noticed there are no input jacks labeled "Instrument").
What many folks do is then how to the nearest Radio Shack (remember them) and buy adapters to make this cable jack fit in this input receptacle ... they know it's not right.
The Output level of your MONTAGE is what is considered LINE level (0 or +6dB), the Input jacks on your typical home stereo are looking for Levels much, much lower than your keyboard is outputting... to the point where it would be like your home stereo trying to take a drink of water - but instead of the backyard garden hose, they keyboard is outputting signal like a fire truck putting out a raging fire.
You will severely overload those inputs on your home stereo... so what to do?
You can get a small format mixer, one that is rated to take in LINE level signals and output consumer level signals... so it will safely reduce the signal do that your home stereo can drink in your MOXF's music signal, without taking a faceful of water from a fire hose!
I'm painting the picture with this analogy because it's serious business, and I find the humor makes folks remember... the difference between Line level and consumer level signals - you don't want to damage your home stereo system. They were not anticipating you plugging in a device like a synthesizer... sure you could adapt the cables, and make believe your safe... what we recommend is getting a mixer that can take in pro level devices, and gives you an output option that matches what your home stereo would be looking for... which is typically rated at -10 (on RCA inputs).
