Hi - I recently updated my firmware and formatted my Flash Board, so I know that it got returned to its default condition. Since then I've added a few samples. I've also added in some third party Voices, e.g., the SX700 piano, and just a few others. I am also using Karma Motif, so I am going back and forth between Karma voices (which are not loaded in Flash I believe) and my usual MOXF default SONGS. I am also seeing some duplicate waveforms on the Flash Board and I've deleted them (more or less).
Right now I have less than 20 "Waveforms" showing when I go to [FILE] and press [F6] FLASH > [SF2] DELETE. That said, I also have less than 10MB left on my entire Flash Board (or less than 1%). This is a complete mystery to me. How did my Flash board get filled up, and what can I do about it? I need some more space for samples.
I've tried to connect the Melas Editor, but for some reason the software does not see the MOXF. I have the most current Steinberg driver.
Help please.
Thanks, David
When you say you know the MOXF and your Flash Board were returned to default condition... what did the Flash Board report in terms of Size immediately after you formatted it. A "Factory Set" does not format the Board. formatting the Flash Board is a separate operation, the MOXF would tell you the current Size and the memory available.
You mention you deleted some data, did you check the size of the Flash Board after each?
The Flash Board will report Full when you have reached any of its limits.
2048 Waveforms or,
8192 Samples,
Or the 512MB or 1024MB Limit depending on which FL Board you have installed (you don't say).
There is no such thing as a Steinberg driver (forgive us for being detailed but it is impossible to know what your issue is without being detailed): we assume you mean the Yamaha Steinberg driver (but did you know there are different Yamaha Steinberg drivers?)
Please provide details - it is the only way you can receive the help you seek. You want the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver and we need to know the version, the type of computer, and the computer operating system. Troubleshooting... It's a checklist... you need to make and check off each item when correct.
When connecting to the computer with the proper driver, you must ensure the MIDI I/O = USB
You must establish communication between the MOXF and the software via USB port 1
Thanks Phil - hope all is well with you otherwise, and its always good to speak with you.
Of course I forget to check what the post-formatting Flash "free space" was, but presently I have 10MB (out of the 512MB available).
I deleted some of the Waveforms (say, a half dozen of them) but the "10MB" free number remained the same. They were presumably small so I didn't move the needle very much.
I do have the proper Yamaha Steinberg driver I believe, and I thought I had set the MIDI I/O = USB and port 1, but I'll double-check. Once that is correct I assume the Melas Editor will be able to see the MOXF. (I am most interested in seeing the "samples" that I have installed on the Flash board, of course, as I can see the small number of Waveforms (by their names).
I'm running a MacBook Air with El Capitan OS. I recently updated the MOXF firmware to the most recent version, and that is when I think I did run the "FORMAT." I seem to remember the formatting occurred when I upgraded the firmware even though I did not intend for it to happen (I was worried I was going to lose all of my Waveforms on the Flash and, in fact, I did.
My goal is two-fold; figure out what samples might be clogging up my Flash, and then freeing that Board up a bit so that I can load new samples.
Thanks in advance for your further thoughts. I can certainly continue deleting the rest of the duplicate Waveforms (there are probably 20 or so left) and see what that does.
Best, David
Phil - problem is solved. I came home and did a file-by-file DELETE. I noticed when I did so that there was a set of 7-8 named Waveforms that were duplicated over half a dozen times. They were the files for (1) an S700 for XS piano, and (2) a PowerGrand piano. I wanted to add those VOICES and installed them a few months' back. They from some third party data set that I found (probably referenced from someone on the Motifator site). In any event, when I later started to install and then uninstall the Karma Motif SONGS, I was re-loading these VOICES "with Samples" I guess. That is presumably what caused the duplication.
What was most interesting to me is that the LAST set of duplicates was HUGE. Four of the files took over 7 minutes each to DELETE. Weird.
In any event, I now have 90% of my FLASH available.
One minor thing; I was never able to get Melas to find the MOXF. I set MOXF/port 1 in the Melas software and made sure to set the MIDI I/O properly. Don't know why it would not see it.
In any event, thanks as always. The lesson here for me is to restore from backup WITHOUT "samples" when the samples are already present:) .

Words to live by for Flash Board users. Glad you got that sorted.
Now on to the software setup. Which Melas Editor are you attempting to setup? The Motif Waveform Editor?
You need to install the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver for Mac OS.
