Is it possible to import the raw waveforms from the MOXF to my computer?

I'd like to access the factory waveforms (particularly the drum sounds) in the MOXF outside of the MOXF VST Editor, so that I can use them in Geist. Basically I just want to have a folder on my computer with those wavs. Is this possible? Those wavs must live somewhere, right? Thank you!

No. So would all of Yamaha’s competitors.

They do live somewhere... in your MOXF, thank you.

All you need is a USB cable connection to the MOXF and you do have all the MOXF Drum sounds and the 2300 Drum Arp Phrases at your disposal. Run the MOXF VST (yes you need an active USB connection to the MOXF hardware, that is the dongle where all those great sounds “live”).

The MOXF is an Audio Interface and can deliver any of the sounds digitally to your computer. But you have to connect to it via USB.

Hope that helps!

D'oh! Hadn't considered that, that makes perfect sense.

That's how I do it in Cubase right now, my problem is that the MOXF only allows 2 insertion effects per voice and doesn't have sub-outputs (like for instance HALion Sonic's 16), so I'm unable to do certain things like sidechain the drums on track 16 to the bass on track 2, or apply say... a compressor, flanger, delay, and distortion simultaneously to just the drums on track 15. I can use other VSTs as Audio Inserts on the MOXF, but then they affect all 16 tracks instead of just the one I want to isolate.

Maybe there are other workarounds to achieve this that I haven't thought of, do you have any suggestions? Thanks for answering!

First thing that comes to mind (forgive me) but when you need more, the next model up in the product line gives you more.

At the Motif XF and MONTAGE level of the synths, you get 16 and 32 outputs respectively. 16 via FW in the Motif XF, and 32 via USB in the MONTAGE.
Motif XF is discontinued so not much help there. But in MONTAGE not only can you route individual Drums to their own bus outputs but you can also do Side Chaining of all kinds. Drums can be used as a modulation source within the MONTAGE motion control engine.

But back to the MOXF...you have two stereo buses OUT on the MOXF. When in 4CH mode, the synth PARTS all use USB3/4 as their default Output. You can use USB1/2 for example, when you want to isolate a particular sound or drum. Are you using the MOXF as your audio interface?

I'm certainly on my way to Montage-land, but until I've got the funds I'll have to make do with this merely exceptional instrument :'( Poor me 😉

Ooh, I see, that could be helpful. Still doesn't totally solve the sidechaining issue because I'd basically have to sidechain my drums to none of the other parts or all of them (vs if there were also a USB 5/6 that I could just put the bassline on), but I could definitely use that to isolate a voice and apply external effects. I can be patient and wait till I upgrade to the Montage for the sidechaining.

Are you using the MOXF as your audio interface?

Yes I am, and this is another area where despite my online research there are a couple things I haven't yet fully wrapped my head around. My possibly false understanding is that I need to use the MOXF as my audio interface so that the MIDI gets routed from Cubase back through the MOXF tone generator producing the actual sound. Is there a way to do that and then route that audio out of the MOXF and into my Focusrite audio interface (where my microphones are plugged in)? Right now the way I do it is exporting the instrumental to a WAV, importing that WAV into the project as a reference track, switching the audio interface over to the Focusrite to record through the mics, and then switching the audio interface back to the MOXF. I imagine that's not the smartest way 😛

Sorry for so many questions, I do my best to research independently first but I figure while I've got the guru on the line I may as well get some help!

The wording is troublesome. The Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver is a dual driver, it has a USB-MIDI component and a USB-Audio component.

If you want to use the MIDI component to run the MOXF Editor, and use the Focusrite as your audio interface, this is facilitated by how you setup the Editor.
Set the MOXF up for 2CH operation... you will be using one stereo USB Output. Connect the main L/R Outputs of the MOXF to two inputs on the Focusrite.

In CUBASE you launch the Editor as a VST INSTRUMENT, Use the “Rack Instrument” > External > MOXF VST

When the Editor launches go to FILE > SETUP
Here are you MIDI settings.. PORT 1 and PORT 4

Also on the menu bar go to FILE > VSTi Setup > here you can select the audio driver the MOXF is using... in the first two slots select the Focusrite driver and the two inputs you have the MOXF connected to on the Focusrite. This will have the MOXF output audio to the Focusrite.

Excellent, thank you SO much. Clearing up the USB-MIDI vs USB-Audio distinction did wonders for me.
