I just bought my MOXF8 a few days ago and I'm really loving it so far. But I am finding it very frustrating to deal with its integration on the computer.

Every time I open up a sound on the song or pattern mode on the MOXF Editor on my computer, the sounds get all messed up. They don't sound like they do when I play the keyboard without it connected to the computer.

The preset effects on all the sounds seem to be changed. I don't know how to deal with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Yamaha Synth. Congratulations on your new MOXF8 - one of the things you will learn is that playing the MOXF8 by itself is quite a bit different than when you connect it to a computer. You will need to learn how to make the connections so that you can integrate the computer into your signal flow. "..the sounds get all messed up." That is correct, particularly _ if you don't make the proper settings. We would be happy to help you but require a bit of information to point you in the right direction.

You are connected to the computer via USB and hopefully are using the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver appropriate for your particular type of computer (for help with any computer related issue, we would appreciate the type of computer and your current Operating System - so that when we recommend drivers, software and firmware updates we know we are pointing you in the right direction.

If you are recording MIDI to the computer it is recommended that use the QUICK SETUP that is appropriate for this task.
If you are recording AUDIO to the computer this will require a different QUICK SETUP for this to take place properly.

The most common mistake is to forget that LOCAL CONTROL needs to be turned OFF when you are recording MIDI and are routed through a Cubase MIDI Track. This causes "doubling" of the audio signal.

The Quick Setups make the critical Utility mode and routing settings for the most common tasks: Stand alone, connected to a computer, transferring data from one SEQ to another, recording arpeggios.

Doubling can occur with MIDI data as connecting yo Cubase echoes signal back to the MOXF. Audio recording has special monitoring settings so that you have a choice of listening "pre" the signal going to the recorder or "post" it traveling through the computer - you don't want to monitor both. This can entail muting one of the audio paths to prevent doubling.

Please provide information about:
Your computer... Windows or Mac
Your Operating System for that computer
The version and build of Cubase you are using... AI8, Pro 8, etc.
Current YSUSB driver
MOXF firmware version

Doubling due to routing is one major topic. Also the allocation of effects is another major topic. When a Voice is moved from Voice mode into a multi-timbral settings, it is connected to the MOXF's internal mixer... Where the volume, system effects and EQ are reset to the basic channel defaults. So some Voices will, indeed, sound different in a Mixing setup.

Hey thanks a ton for the reply! It makes sense.

I'm using a Macbook Pro running on Yosemite 10.10.
DAW: Cubase AI 8
The MOXF firmware the one the it comes with right out the box.
I have no clue what YSUSB is 😛

Okay, now we can direct you to specific help for your setup. The MOXF communicates with your computer via a USB connection. Two types of data are sent between the two devices: MIDI data and Audio data.

The YSUSB (Yamaha Steinberg USB) is the driver that allows your computer to communicate with the MOXF.
The current version is 1.9.6

The firmware is version operating system that runs the MOXF's own operations. Yamaha updates this firmware from time to time to not only fix bugs, but add new features, and improve compatibilitity with external devices. You can easily verify your firmware as follows:
Press [UTILITY]
Press [JOB]
The firmware version is shown on this screen: current is 1.10.x

All downloads for your MOXF can be found through the global portal: http://download.yamaha.com
Select your country
Select your product
Here you will find the FIRMWARE and the DRIVER, and the SOFTWARE (MOXF Tools/Editors) Content, etc.

Once installed on your computer, software, like Cubase, can select this to communicate with the MOXF.
We have put a basic getting started guide together that will take you through the process of setting up and making it all work. In the RESOURCES area of this site, find also articles that help with the Editor VST.
