Hi
I have owned a Montage for a Year ish.
But I just Got a MoXF6

The keys play great. But Feel Fragile ish.
I know it is not semi weighted. So that lends to the feel.

But For you players that have Had a MoXF6 for a while.

How do you feel the Key-Bed is holding up? And Will hold up.?

I'm actually afraid I might wear it out quickly:o . And I know it is not Yamahas Higher end Keybed
A number of answers Would give me a good general view. I am just not used to this kind of Feel.

Thanks in advance.

Check with several local service centers, bet they don’t see many of them... mileage will vary, if you don’t have a loud enough sound system and you are generally very very hard on your keyboards you will notice a difference between the more expensive (FSX) action and the one found in the MOXF6. But in general, you find it’s a Yamaha. In other words, if you break keys often, that’s likely a trend for how you approach playing. The keyboards are designed for musical abuse (which is different from just “abuse”).

Phil.
No I have never broken a key.
Comparatively. It just felt very Fragal:p
Not what I am used to at all. That is most of the Fear.:D
But it plays great.

But it plays great.

We think so too. It was a new action when introduced back in 2011, developed specifically for the MOX6 and then used again in the MOXF6. Given its record over the last seven years, it’s proven itself - enough to wear the Yamaha name.

I may play it for a couple of days here. My fingers need a break. From breaking in the Kontrol MK2.(Another thing. I do not think should be going on with a key-bed.)

Now Action wise. The Montage has become my Favorite Action Ever. I think. It is just the Extreme Tight Key spacing I can not completely deal with.

The unweighted action of the MoXF6 Reminds me of the Kronos a little. And The MoXF is Spaced 'Normal' ish.
But I actually like the feel better than the kronos(What I remember anyway).

Quick measurement of the MoXF6 whole keybed. Was only 5/8" diff(Shorter). Than the Kontrol MK2. Which is spaced Almost exactly.
Like a Korg(within 1%). There is really no. Acclimating myself Between the 2.

On Both. There is Room for my big fingers:o I know Japan does not really like listening to USA.
But The Key spacing of the MoXF6. Is what all Yamaha Key-beds should be.
*Montage is 1" shorter. Per 5 octaves. Makes it about 1.23" shorter. That is a Huge Difference.

Unfortunately. I may never play the Montage Keybed again. And I will miss the action. Something I call 'Constant Consistent Pressure Down and Up'.
And that I have never felt in any other keybed Besides a Real Grand piano. I had to make some player friends. Play it for a solid 15 min before they got what I was saying.

Phil
Some Different measurements
The Overall Difference Between the MoXf (32 & 1/2 inches) and the Kontroll MK2 61 key (33 & 3/8ths inches)
But
Where it Gets interesting.
The Space Between the F# and G# is 5/8ths inches. For Both keybeds.
Same space between the G# and A# is 5/8ths inches.
The Montage is Right around 1/2 inch spacing Between those same keys.
So the Black keys of the Montage. Must be Wider. And That is what Causes all the spacing Tightness.

Interesting......

As Yamaha probably. Has Some stock, thinner(Less wide.) black keys they could fit to the Montage key-bed. And If you could offer it as a option when ordering. You might get a lot more sales. BeCause. I know many who will not buy a montage. Just because of the Very Tight key spacing.

I think this Further Drives home my first theory of Aesthetics. Being at the Root of This nonsense.
IE: In the Big Bosses mind. Less Visible gaps between keys. Makes it look more Finely Crafted.

You could argue. Both sides of that. But i do not think anyone. Gets to argue with him anyway. LOL

And even I have to admit. It is Aesthetically. Near perfect.

But that does not help the players with large fingers and There are a lot of them.

But hey. If you can find the stock thinner black keys. That can fit the Montage Key-Bed.
Toss my Idea around Yamaha. 1. An option for thinner black keys. When ordering. And/Or. 2. A retrofit Set of thinner Black keys.
I am sure there are people. That would Buy a Retrofit Kit of thinner black keys. Yes You would have to be very PC about it.
But aren't you sorta King of that anyway.;)

OR
Fit the MotifXF Key-Bed(Same action) As long as it is the Same overall length.(And YA Service Said it was The Same).
Because I know it has wider spacing between the black keys. We played one side by side with a montage. And there was a big difference in spacing.

You might see a good size sales increase.

Had to find out on my own:(

4 1 1/2 months. I have been playing/Breaking in my Kontrol MK II. *Out of the box. Way!!! too Firm! And still a little too firm.
So I had to give my poor fingers a rest.
So I finally got around to playing the keybed of the MOXF6.
3 days of 2 to 3 hours playing.
And it(MoXF6 Keybed) is now Noisier than my 5 year old Keylab.!!!!! And that is Noisy! I really can not turn the sound up enough.
To not hear it.(Without the wife complaining.). And that is Loud! I am in a Very insulated area.

Now I knew it was no High end Keybed. But..... For a $1200 keyboard.
Just unbelievable poor quality.(Thank god I did not pay near that.).

Now I had heard for myself the KeyBed Click problem of the MOXF8. (That is horrible).
Did not think The non weighted moxf6 would have that problem. Well it does not have That specific problem.
It is just Very, Very poor Quality. And Thank god. I do have a good keybed in the Kontrol MK II.

While I am at this
I keep seeing people praise this unit. But only after They Spend a fortune on Flash Memory. And load Better Sounds.
I have a feeling. Once you buy/install the Flash. The Filters are removed/opened in the audio path.

When you look back at the original. Stupidly high price 1 Gig of flash cost For the MoXF. And the MOXF6 Original price.
You were within. A couple hundred of a Montage6 B Stock or Demo.
So The pricing on this unit Was Very, Very high starting out.
Even at the MOXF6 current price. It should come with the 1 gig flash. That would be a Fair price.

sounds like you should maybe own something else. The other manufacturers eagerly await your feedback. I've played most of the sub-$2000 professional keyboards, i like MOXF6 more than the others I tried. FA-06 was horrible imo, which I guess they now admit as they improved the keybed in the newly released FA-07. So is Krome imo. ymmv, everyone feels it differently.

I play with headphones at home so as not to bother my wife at all. I don't hear the keys.

I own a Montage 6 and A Kontrol MK II And Now A MOXF 6. And Legacy keyboards.

In its Price Range (Current $) The MoXF is the best overall Keyboard. (But not the best sounding. Until You install Flash and sounds.).
A Keybed That Turns from a little noise into Ricky Racket in 3 days use. Is just Pi.. Poor quality.

Roland's FA keybeds. Use a Shortcut method of Triggering Sound(not the normal 2 or 3 Switch Velocity switches).
They are all still very bad. Play any of them fast and some note(S) Still will not trigger.

Krome is What $1099. Well that is the bottom. And I never bothered. Hated the feel. in 5 seconds.

Which makes every Brand in that Price Range. Bottom shelf. AND/OR. All overpriced(Take your pick. But I would say both.).

I bought the MOXF for a specific reason. That is not panning out. (I promised I would not go into that. part).
And I never intended to. Use the Keybed anyway. The Komplete Kontrol MK II Is Semi Perfect. And I Use it to play the Montage as well as the MOXF 6.
(Montage key spacing is way to tight. Otherwise. The Best Action Keybed there is).

I am near deaf (Midrange) in 1 ear. So no Headphones.
Long term use of Headphones. Destroys Peoples hearing anyway.
I only use Headphones lightly when I am Mastering.
To be safe-er with your hearing. You Need the Open back Type Headphones. And of course.
They are way more expensive. But that keeps the air pressure swings off your ear drums.
But they are way too hard to use for Reference headphones. But just jamming. Fine/Good.
And much less of a chance of hearing loss.

Now. A friend of mine Gave me a 512 meg Flash card today. (He bought a 2 gig card. 4 his Motif) And It turned the MOXF(Flash Memory Sounds) into a great sounding keyboard(I Loaded piano sounds.).
Still not Up there with the Montage though. Close... And maybe tweeking would help.
But There are the audio Filters YA put in the MOXF. That will not let it sound as good as a Motif.
