Yes on Windows the Audio Device is identified by the driver name, "Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO", Select that... There are four USB audio Ports. By default USB 1/2 are assigned for the A/D Input Part, and USB 3/4 are assigned to the MOXF synth Parts.
The VST Editor will be using 3 and 4 for the synthesizer. Go to the EDITOR > FILE > VSTi SETUP > you should see four slots, the first two occupied by ports 3 and 4.
You want to go to the CUBASE > DEVICES > VST CONNECTIONS > INPUT tab > and ADD BUS, Add a Mono bus > set the AUDIO DEVICE = Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO > set the DEVICE PORT to "Yamaha MOXF6/MOXF8 - 1"
Alternatively, you could setup a Stereo Bus and use just the Left side. In any stereo pair the odd number will be left, the even number will be the right.
Please see the step by step AUDIO RECORDING (3-Part) series on setting up and doing basic audio recording with the MOXF. You can find it here on YAMAHASYNTH by going to the SYNTHS page, and under MOXF see "Getting Started with your MOXF".
Part II goes over specifically setting up to record the synth on ports 3/4 and a microphone via port 1 simultaneously. Let us know.
Hello, I'm having a similar issue as the above user Scot while using the MOXF8 with Cubase 8.5 where the Port routing is constantly wrong, meaning, variously, that hitting keys on the MOXF* triggers the random opening of windows (keyboard shortcuts wrongly accessed I'm guessing), or transport doesn't operate in DAW Remote mode, or even that no midi is received at Cubase. I'm also using the Steinberg CC121 controller and was wondering if that may be adding to the problem. I've updated all drivers to the current ones for my MOXF8, CC121, and MR816CSX. My computer is a Creation Station from Sweetwater built specifically to run DAWs. It's an Intel Xeon Quad Core 3.60Ghz with 32GB Ram , 64 Bit Operatiing System, Windows 8.1. It's lightning fast and doesn't appear to have any latency issues.I've had combatibilty problems for years with various computers and interfaces not working together so I finally have a computer that can do it all. It's very frustrating to be playing a midi part on the MOXF8 and having various windows open and close in Cubase triggered by certain keys on the keyboard. Do i need to shut the CC121 off in the midi port setup? I've tried different variations but nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated.
Thx,
Steve
In MIDI there are several types of messages: examples include Note-on events that turn on and off musical notes, or Controller messages that change from 0-127. When these messages are sent to the synthesizer Tone Generator (on Port1) musical results occur. This you are probably very familiar with.
On Port number 2, the same messages are used to Remote Control the DAW software, so pressing note #36 might open a display window, touching it again may close that window. Instead of the Note-on triggering note "C1", the triggering of the note "opens" or "closes" a screen. A Controller going from 0-127 might be used to change volume or pan something... There is a REMOTE template that has these note numbers and controllers mapped to specific tasks.
Trouble begins when misrouted MIDI messages get merged onto the wrong Port. (They need to be kept discreet) That is what is happening. It is as simple and complex as that.
A MIDI Note-on is simply a SWITCH. On Port 1 it turns On and Off notes. On Port 2 it opens and closes windows.
Fail to keep the MIDI ports separated - you get exactly what you are experiencing, now
