Is it possible to play the Yamaha WX11 through the MX49 using it's tone generator?

Yes, the WX11 can be used to play any MIDI device capable of receiving MIDI command (just about anything). You have the option of sending cc011 Expression - which allows you to control performance volume over the receiving device.
