No, that’s pretty specific. If you tell us what it is you are attempting to accomplish, we can help you get started (at least) with the MX49.

The MX49 has its own built-in MIDI and Audio Interface. To connect the MX49 to your computer you’ll need a USB cable, and you’ll need to download and install the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver for the computer type you are using.

Hello..Thanks for your reply..I'm trying to connect the MX-49 to my PC with Reaper..Can I still use the Focusrite as my main interface ( AD- DA ) and control the recording from the DAW..?..I just want the MX-49 to lock to the DAW and I be able to use the "voices" in it to record midi and audio tracks into the DAW..?..I know I have to download the Steinberg USB drivers also..Thanks..!

_ Connect the Main L&R Output of the MX to a pair of Inputs on the Audio Interface. The MX’s Audio Inputs will be referred to as Focusrite Input x & y.
_ Connect the MX via either to the Focusrite’s MIDI In/Out using standard 5-pin MIDI cables, (Out-to-In) or directly to the computer via USB (To Host -> Computer)
_ If you use the Focusrite as the MIDI Interface, then you just need whatever Driver Focusrite recommends (as it will be both the Audio and MIDI interface); Set the MX MIDI I/O = MIDI. The MX’s MIDI ports will be referred to as Focusrite MIDI In/Out.
_ If you connect the MX directly to the computer via USB, set the MIDI I/O = USB. If this is how you connect the MX for MIDI, then you will need the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver (singular) for Windows.

Hello..Thanks again for your help..I got the midi cables hooked up and my DAW is recording the midi info on the track but it doesn't play back the recorded info that's on the track..You can see the midi recorded, but no sound..Using midi this way, do I still need to install the Steinberg Driver...?

If you have MIDI cables (5-pin) connected to your MX, then make sure MIDI I/O = MIDI
If you have the audio Outputs of the MX connected to two channels of the Focusrite, then you don’t need any Driver but the one recommended by Focusrite.

You are not using the MX’s built-in MIDI interface, you are not using the MX’s built-in Audio Interface. So no Driver from Yamaha Steinberg is necessary... you’re not using the MX to talk directly to the computer. The MX is addressing the Focusrite with both 5-pin MIDI and analog Audio. So it is the Focusrite Driver that you need.

You are here because you get a response here, but your issue is a Focusrite issue or more likely, a DAW issue.
We assume you are playing the keys of the MX to generate the MIDI data. (By the way you cannot hear MIDI data, it makes no sound... the MIDI data that is recorded to your DAW MIDI Track must be routed back Out so that it is returned to the MX.

You should set Local Control on the MX = Off. This way you will hear NO AUDIO until you actually set things up correctly. Because if you can hear yourself during Record, but cannot hear yourself during playback... you never had the complete routing path setup correctly.

Follow the Signal Flow
We assume because you say you do... have a 5-pin MIDI cable from the MX to the Focusrite MIDI In... and you have a 5-pin MIDI cable going from the Focusrite MIDI Out to the MX MIDI In.
This will allow the recorded MIDI data to travel from and back to the MX.

The DAW MIDI Track must be set to Receive MIDI In from the Focusrite.
The DAW MIDI Track must be set to Transmit MIDI Out to the Focusrite.

The MX will then respond to that MIDI data by generating sound (Audio). The Main L&R Outputs of the MX will Send that data to the Focusrite via a pair of 1/4” signal cables. The Main L&R Output of the Focusrite goes to your sound system (Studio Monitors).

Let us know...

Hello...As I have followed these advice, I cannot find where I'm missing anything..I have the cables, midi cable, local control turned off..I have the Midi in/out selected in the MX..Here's a question: I can see the midi signal lights on the armed tracks in my DAW. How does midi " see" the vsti voices in the MX to complete the audio sound..?..I know it's something simple I'm missing here..Thanks..!

Hang in there... we can methodically take this on. Don’t guess, you can be sure about these setup things. We need just one piece of information...

I can see the midi signal lights on the armed tracks in my DAW.

If you mean you see MIDI activity when you play the keys of the MX, and you can see that it is recording... then the MX is successfully transmitting MIDI data to your DAW MIDI Track. You are ‘seeing’ MIDI data arriving at the Track’s MIDI IN

On the MIDI Track there must be a setting for transmitting the data back Out. That’s where you must start your search. There are just a few checkpoints along this path. This is the first one:
What is the setting for the Track’s MIDI OUT?

Hello..When I look into preference in my DAW, I only see options to tick for the USB midi and not 5 pin midi the way I am trying to use it..Is this a problem...?..Thanks..

No, no, no, not preferences... The MIDI Track you are recording to. It does have a MIDI iIn and MIDI Out setting doesn’t it? ...

I cant keep guessing, any reason you are not mentioning which DAW?

Hello..I think what the problem is that when I open up the track in Reaper for the in/out midi send, what shows up for options is only the Focusrite USB box. Even when I look into the preference in Reaper to select midi outputs, only Focusrite USB option shows up..So I think the MX is looking for USB option is why things are not working..I can put a VSTi on the midi track and it works correctly..!..So I may have to try to install the Steinberg driver...I think your info you gave made things work, it's just that it's that the MX is not seeing the return from the DAW via just the 5 pin midi because of no way to enable it..Thanks for your patience..!

Midi out setting is " Focusrite USB " the only option..
