I've been racking my brain for the past few days/ searching forums, downloading and uninstalling drivers trying to get my Yamaha MX to communicate with pro tools. I am connected directly to my laptop using a midi/usb cable. Pro tools is recognizing the emulated device and I'm pretty sure I have all the ins and outs set correctly in pro tools so I'm assuming there is some setting I may be missing on the MX. My question is for those who have used yamaha synths as midi controllers, Is there a specific setting the yamaha needs to be in to send a signal to my interface? Any help is greatly appreciated. 😮

We are not sure what you are referring to when you say "a midi/usb cable". You must connect the MX to your computer, either a PC or Mac... (you don't mention which one you have)... Depending on what type of "interface" you have, you may or may not need the Yamaha Steinberg Driver... The Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver, separate version for Windows computers and Mac computers, requires that you connect via USB (this means physically the USB jack on the MX) - from the MX's "TO HOST" port directly to your computer. This single cable will handle both MIDI data bi-directionally on five Ports, and AUDIO communication in and out (2in/2out).

The MX acts as its own MIDI and AUDIO interface. If, however, you are connecting to an external interface: ("Is there a specific setting the yamaha needs to be in to send a signal to my interface"). Unfortunately you don't mention what type of interface you own. Is it MIDI or is it an AUDIO interface? or both ?

Obviously it does not have to be used at all... since the MX has it own MIDI and AUDIO interface built-in - all you need is a standard USB cable.
But if you prefer to use an external AUDIO/MIDI interface then you must connect the main LEFT and RIGHT output of the MX to your external interface - use whatever driver is recommended for that particular device. If you then want to use that external device to communicate MIDI, you'll need to connect the 5-pin MIDI jacks to your external MIDI Interface. No Yamaha Driver is necessary when you are using something external for AUDIO and MIDI

If you are using an external AUDIO interface but want to use the MX via USB, then you would need to download and install the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver and select it as your MIDI interface in your DAW. And you must connect with a standard USB cable.

If you still cannot figure this out, we'd be happy to help you - but you are going to have provide some real information:
_ We know you have an MX. (Congrats!)
_ What type of cable are you using? Is it a standard USB cable? What jack(s) on the MX is it connected to?
_ What is your Audio Interface?
_ Are you going to use it for MIDI as well? (we guess not, because if you want to use the MX's Control Surface functions you will need to connect with a proper USB cable.)
_ Did you know that the MX has its own Audio Interface built-in? Just asking because many overlook this...
_ Are you using a Mac or a Windows computer?
