I am still relatively new to keyboard, so please bear with me. I was wondering if I were to hook a MIDI cable from my MX 61 to an external hardware synth unit, is the MIDI signal effected if I split the MX keyboard?

No. What goes OUT via MIDI is a single CHANNEL of information across all notes.
