Can I connect more than two monitors to this mixer, the Yamaha 01v96i?
I just bought a pair of Yamaha HS7s and I already have 5 inchers, can I hook up all four
to the mixer?

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hi there JW! Welcome to YamahaSynth!

The 01v96i is like a SwissArmy knife kind of tool, you can connect multiple speakers. It supports 3.1, 4.1, 5.1 and even 6.1 Surround... Which require connecting 4, 5, 6, and 7 speakers, respectively.

Now you are probably not interested in doing Surround (at this point). On the back panel you have the Monitor Outputs - typically used in a home recording situation. You have the Stereo Outputs and the four OMNI Outputs. Additionally you have the expansion slot that can be used to provide 8 additional D-to-A outputs. How you configure them and use them is entirely up to you.

You could connect one pair to the STEREO OUTPUTS - it would be controlled by the red Stereo fader. The Monitor Output has a separate Monitor pot.

Give us an idea of what you want to accomplish. Do you want to setup a situation where you switch between the two sets?
Are you using the 01V96i to record to a DAW?

Hi, we just got settled into our new home after the other one burned down.
I have FOUR Yamaha HS monitors 7 and 5 sets 2 7s and 2 5s.
I would like to hear ALL FOUR of them at once, meaning if I play my instrument/or computer sound, I would like to hear the sound
from all four speakers at once.

I will at some point be using a daw..Sonar X3
I have a MOTIF XF 7.
I can only hear one of the speakers.
I have the four monitors plugged into the four Omni jacks on the back of the o1v mixer
If someone could call me, that would work even better: xxx-xxx-xxxx

Right now, I would just like to hear my Motif and my Computer through all four monitors.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP it's kind of desperate in the studio right now. lol

Two things:
1) There is nothing good that can come from listening to two pairs of Monitor Speakers playing the same program, in the same listening environment. By definition, a pair of near-field monitors are designed to focus attention on the tight arrival of high frequency and low frequency program at the listening point (sweet spot). By having duplicate near-field monitoring systems you will defeat the purpose of their design. I just need mention this if your goal is to make mixes you can believe.

2) Most systems would tend to be designed so that the operator could switch between pairs of speakers when two sets of speakers were connected, or as I mentioned initially you are setting up a Surround Sound situation. For example, you might have a Left Front-Right Front, Center, Left Rear-Right Rear, SubWoofer SYSTEM for a Surround setup.

Powered Loudspeaker (sound reinforcement type) have a "Thru" that allows you to place multiple speakers on both Left and Right sides. You do not find such "thru" jacks on near-field monitors because of their specific use case and design.

Short story: I cannot recommend combining two pair of near-field Monitors for any critical listening, but all you would need to do is to deliver the same signal to both speakers per side.

You can have a Yamaha Application Specialist call you, but you must initiate the process. Here's how it works:
You call the Yamaha Customer Support desk 714.522.9000
You speak to a human - they take your name and number
You are placed in a queue (where they will call you back in the order the call came in)
The technical support call is on Yamaha
They will walk you through your issue.

Don't be surprised if they ask your application, because as mentioned, it is typical to have two sets of monitors to either compare, or as a part of a surround system... But if you simply want to be a few dB louder (and slightly phase-y) they still will be able to help you reach your goal.

Try them on Tuesday, Monday's a holiday.

ok, thanks,[I didn't think the monitors would react as you stated, that's scary.
I noticed that the HS7 monitors do come with a subwoffer.
So to just simply hear one of them, I plug them into the monitor out jack and work with that?

Sadly I may have wasted my money on the HS7s when my 5 inchers work just fine.
What's the point of having the Omni out jacks in the back, if it's not advised to listen to all the monitors at the same time, like a simply four speaker
sound system?
Well I don't want to mess my new mixer and monitors up, so I'm forced to keep it simple I guess.

Thank you Sir

You can do whatever you wish. I'm just telling you that near-field Monitor Speakers are designed to be used in pairs - one pair at a time. UNLESS you are configuring a Surround Sound system.

All the HS monitors (HS5, HS7 and even HS8) can use the HS series SUB, because they are all designed to be used in Surround Sound setups, when required. This is why they are sold individually and not just in pairs. The 5" monitors (HS5) need the Sub more than the HS7 or the HS8... I like the HS7 because they are closest to the legendary NS10Ms which also featured the 6.5" woofer.
My personal preference with the HS8 is to just use those without the Sub. (But again it is a personal preference).

The point of the OMNI OUTs jacks on the back panel is flexibility - you can certainly connect one of your speakers to each one, and setup to exactly as you are thinking. I can only suggest that you don't based on my background in audio engineering, but it's your music and you can setup whatever makes your workflow go. But I would be remiss if I simply answered your question without telling you the facts. That's how I always roll (you know this...)

🙂

Again, if you want (and you should) please call our Customer Support desk and ask to speak to someone about the 01V96i... you will definitely benefit from the conversation with an Application Specialist. Trust me, ...it will be worth doing and it help you feel better about your gear and how to best use it!
