Motif XS User Performances not showing up in MODX

I am converting some of my Motif XS User Voices/Performances to the MODX. No issues with creating files and then loading them into he MODX though either a Library or User File.. However, none of my User Performances are showing up in the MODX. I am using an ALL File from the Motif XS. I am only seeing my Voices and Drums in the MODX.

What am I missing?

Hi Mark,
What you are missing is you can opt to convert the Motif XS Voices or you can opt to convert the Motif XS Performances. Either/or.

A Motif XS All data file (.X0A) can be loaded to your MODX as a USER File or a LIBRARY File.
[UTILITY] > touch “Contents” > “Load” > set the “Content Type” = User File or Library File
Navigate to the .X0A file and tap the box to select it

Here you must designate “Voice” or “Performance”.
Tap the box of your choice - *green* is your active selection.

If you tap “Voice” — the MODX will convert 384 Normal Voices and 32 Drum Kit Voices into 416 Single Part MODX Performances.
If you tap “Perf” — the MODX will convert 384 Motif XS Performances to 384 (max. 4-Part) Multi Part MODX Performances.

The MODX will open the Motif XS File an read either the Voices, Waveform, and Arpeggios or it will open and read the Performances, Waveforms and Arpeggios.

It is an either/or situation. The MODX has no Voices and it has no Voice Mode. Every Motif XS Voices becomes a Single Part MODX Performance when you select “Voice” as your convert option. This allows the MODX to catalog each program as a separate entity.

The MODX has only Performances.
A Performance can contain as few as one Part, as many 8 KBD CTRL Parts that can played simultaneous, or even as many as 16 Parts when setup for play with an external device or when Sequencing.

The MODX has so much more memory than the old Motif XS, each Part within the MODX Performance is stored directly in memory. Unlike the Motif XS where Performances referred to Voice locations, the MODX every Part has its own memory location; there is no referencing data from another mode. There is only Performance mode. Parts can be “merged” into larger and larger Performances but everything is Performances.

Once you have converted your .X0A file by loading it to the User Bank, for example, SAVE a MODX version of the data — the native format will load several times faster. The MODX can read its own format faster than it can convert the Motif XS file format.

Extra Credit: Details
When converting data from a Motif XS/XF to a MONTAGE/MODX, as indicated above, you can convert the Voices into Single Part Performance or you can have it convert the Performance. All User Arps are converted, all resident Waveforms also are converted, including those that were integrated with a Motif XS/XF Sequence.

Songs, Patterns, Mixing, and Master programs are not converted...
Songs can be transferred via .mid Standard MIDI File
Patterns can transferred via .mid Standard MIDI File
Motif XS Mixing and Master setups are not applicable to the MODX engine.

Should you load to the User Bank or as Library File?
In general, you would load them to the USER Bank initially... loading any file to the User Bank will replace data currently in the User Bank (this is normal — loading a User file replaces the previous User Bank, same as in the Motif-series).

While the data in the USER Bank, you can play through the data and take inventory of the converted data.
Press [UTILITY] > “Contents” > “Data Utility” > here you can review what is in your current internal memory.
The XS converted data will appear in the following Folders: Arp, Performance, and Waveform

You can try out your newly converted data as follows. Here’s how:
From the HOME screen
Press [CATEGORY]
Set the “Bank/Favorite” = User
Set the “Attribute” = All
You will see listed just the newly converted data.

It is from the User Bank that you can save as either a MODX User File (.X8U) or you can save as a MODX Library File (.X8L).
We recommend you make one of each type for long term storage.

When would you Load the Motif XS .X0A file directly to a Library?
When you want to extract specific data from the File, you can load it temporarily to a Library location. When you load a Motif XS .X0A File directly to a MODX Library location, you can do so without replacing the current User Bank data. This allows you to play through it, select the data you like, and assemble just that data by IMPORTING it (adding it to) your current User Bank data.

From the Library location you can extract just the Performances you wish to keep, moving them to the User Bank... this is called “Library Import”. It does this without overwriting anything in the User Bank. In this way you can assemble programs from various Libraries into one Bank.

What is the difference between a .X8U and a .X8L File
The USER File (.X8U) can contain 640 Performances, 8 Banks of 256 Live Set slots, 2,048 Waveforms, 256 User Arps, 256 Motion Sequences, 8 MicroTunings. A User File can be loaded to the MODX User Bank replacing the current MODX User Bank.

Data that occupies your current User Bank can be SAVED AS... a MODX Library. You can think of this process as.. the User Bank is a work area. It is RAM... It is where you can program new Performances, create User Arps and Motion Sequences, configure Performances into convenient Live Set set lists... etc. It is the User Bank data, all of this work, that can be “published” (installed) as a MODX Library.

When you SAVE AS... Library File, the current User Performances, User Waveforms, User Arps, User Motion Sequences, User Live Sets and User MicroTunings are converted and written into the .X8L file.

This .X8L file type has the unique ability to be able to INSTALL to semi-permanent FLASH ROM (Read Only Memory) all of your personal data.
Your User data is bundled into a File that has the ability to “burn your data into Flash” — where it becomes invulnerable, it cannot be overwritten, it cannot be lost, the data in a Library becomes as permanent as your Factory Performances, Waveforms, Arpeggios, Motion Sequences, Live Set, and MicroTunings. This data will remain in Flash until you specifically DELETE it or you completely Initialize your entire MODX or you restore a complete BACKUP File (.X8A) of other data.

A MODX User File (.X8U) can only be loaded to the User Bank... where it replaces the previous User data
A MODX Library File (.X8L) can only be loaded (installed) to one of 8 Library locations... it cannot be overwritten.

Data can be installed to a Library by saving the User data as a Library file then loading that Library file
Data can be moved from a Library to the User Bank using the “Library Import” routine.

Plain talk: A Library - there are 8 - represents an entire User Bank frozen for recall.

Bad Mister,

Perfect! I tried this out this morning and everything worked. I really appreciate the very detailed response. You were 100% correct in that I missed the part to opt to convert the Motif XS Voices or you can opt to convert the Motif XS Performances. I had completely glossed over the part at the top of the load process to Tap the box of your choice - *green* is your active selection. I had searched previous posts and did not catch that anywhere so pointing that out helped tremendously! I had just been focused on converting my Motif XS Voices and had not tried any Motif Performances.

I did encounter one issue in converting the Motif Performances. I tried a sample set of about 32 Motif Performances for the Library Import. Went through the process of selecting them and then doing the Library Import. The MODX came back with an error message - No Data. Tried a few times and same result. So nothing converted. I recall seeing that there may not be a 100% conversion rate factor so I decided to just load one at a time. I found one culprit that had the No Data issue. 31 out of 32 converted successfully and I can live with that. So going forward, lesson learned, is to do this Motif Performance conversion in chunks to limit the potential error factor!

This is a great Forum for us "newbies" to help navigate the MODX/Montage and really appreciate the help from the experts!

Mark
