... and no one is testing it. The AN1x Editor (1997) predates the Windows 8.1 operating system by more than a full decade. If it runs (it will be totally luck) there is no harm in trying. Computer companies, when they change operating system numbers usually obsolete older software (particularly music software) as they go forward. If you have the AN1X Editor it will tell you what the recommended Windows operating system is - no one keeps updating stuff once the product, the editor and the computer OS that it ran on are all discontinued.

I don't know about Windows 8.1 but I can confirm that today I used AN1x Editor successfully on a Windows 10 (64x) computer together with Ableton 9 without the need for MidiOX or anything else. 😉

The installer will fail. But I found a work-around...

I've installed AN1x Editor on a 32bit Windows 7 computer. Then I took a copy from the c:program filesYAMAHA folder and placed it in c:program files (x86) folder.
There was no need solve any incompatibility issues; I just clicked the AN1xedit.exe and it worked right on. After first use it recognized the file extension (.AN1) and I could use preset files to start the Editor. I had to set device number to 1 on my synth though (must have changed it back in the days). When transferring all presets I get an midi buffer full error on the synth, but after power on all is ok and presets have been stored. most amazingly, I just got a Motu Midi Express 128. I don't know if it's the unit or Windows 10, but I was able to share the midi in and out of this device with Ableton and AN1x. This is really cool since Ableton cannot deal with sysex dumps. I can use long lost presets now which gives an unbelievable creative boost in my case.

Hi John - I just want to say a huge thank you for your post - I have been trying to install AN1Xedit on Win 10 64-bit without any success, and had pretty much given up - but I stumbled across your method, and it works!

Hallo! I answer only now, 'cause I registered recently to the forum after buying a Reface DX. I'm on Win8.1 64bit and I use the AN1x editor succesfully!
I installed it in december and I don't remember if it worked out of the box or if I had to use compatibility mode or what, but it works. If not out of the box, there will be a way to do it, 'cause mine is just working 🙂

I own a PLG150-AN, and have historically always used the AN Expert Editor within Studio Connections in Cubase 32 bit despite my 64 bit computer. In order to see if I'd be able to edit the PLG after upgrading to Cubase 64 bit, I installed AN1x-Edit on my Win 7 64 bit machine expecting there to be problems (I had my old XP laptop around in case I needed to transfer the file as described above). But it installed and ran without error! Mind you, I have not used it yet to edit my PLG, but I feel obligated to contribute, even to this old post, that there are options for 64 bit machines to use the AN1X editor.

FYI... My experience when moving from Windows XP Professional x32 to Windows 7 Professional x64 is that much of the old MIDI software will run by just copying the installed version from the XP machine. No need to install it on the Win7 x64 machine.

I had some trouble with the stand-alone AN Expert Editor. While it installed OK on the Win7 machine, it could not find the MIDI device. But then I discovered that the plug-in version of the AN Expert Editor worked just fine running inside XGWorks. The AN1x Editor also runs on the Win7 x64 machine by just copying itl... no need to install it. I've had similar experience with several MIDI editors when porting over to Win7 x64 from XP x32. As Bad Mister says, it's trial and error when it come to legacy software.

After bringing my AN1X down from the loft, I've downloaded the ANxEdit software today and successfully installed it on Windows 10, 64bit without any issues.

After extracting the files to a temporary folder, I set the setup.exe file to run in compatibility mode with Windows XP SP3. I also made sure to install to a folder other than Program Files (x86). I've found with older applications it is much simpler to install to a folder outside of the Program Files folders, as they appear to have some additional protection on more modern versions of Windows. In my case I have a folder called Music on the root of the C drive and so I installed to c:MusicYamaha. I'm happily transfering patches to and from the AN1X now.
