The primary consumer for this feature are Yamaha reps and artists who demo the keyboard. Ripping this feature out of MODX would make it more difficult to demo effectively. That said, someone has to test this unsupported feature and report back.

We had it working on MODX also. My feeling is that the touch response is a bit slower than using it with MONTAGE. But it worked over a few days without any problems. We used the "Plugable USB 2.0 to VGA … Adapter" and the Dell S2240T.

Despite that allow me to remind that it is not an official supported feature. Everyone can use it on his own risk but may lose warranty if something unexpected might happen.

Ι would use it mainly to familiarize myself with the modx interface. Simply more convenient from the small screen and strictly for studio use.

Unfortunately no. We just have this one unit and that is the only experience.

Some useful feedback on the subject, after practically researching it.

1. The "Plugable USB 2.0 to VGA … Adapter" works perfectly and the display on any monitor (i've tested 2) was fine.

2. The main problem is to find a compatible monitor. I've tested next Dell's monitor Dell P2418HT, with no touch response. Quite obvious because the touch is through a USB3 port of the monitor, something MODX doesn't support. I've also tested an LG old one ( 19mb15t-i model ), which although it has an USB2 port, doesn't responded to touch. In fact that monitor cannot connect as a second (touch) monitor even with a laptop.

   Fortunately i was able to return both (it's a long and funny story), so avoid them if you're in general interested in the subject.

   My summary is that it would be quite difficult to do it, if you cannot (as me) find a Dell S2240T (discontinued). All new touch screen monitors are USB3 port equipped for the touch connection....

    

If you look at other forums which discuss GenOS - you can see that contacting customer support has revealed some nice support in terms of which USB-to-video interfaces are supported (and why). You'll also find hints at what makes the monitor touch compatible - although not from what I would deem as an official source. GenOS doesn't support the touch part at all - so they have no concern to follow-up with that. However, it seems that getting the right support help employee would yield some useful information on what other monitors may support touch. I have a few candidates I think would probably work beyond the Dell. One's from Planar and still available (they hardly ever retire monitors). I'm looking primarily for the touch protocol (egalax) and also, for grins, looking that it supports HID touchscreen as well. The screen is a published resolution - and some smaller panels do not support the full resolution - so I avoid those. The larger monitors support much higher resolutions - so this is not an issue.

With a Dell S2240T and some time I could probably create a device which translates Android or Windows screen touches to MODX screen touches and the screen can be displayed on Windows or most Android devices fairly easily using a different cable also mentioned in the GenOS forums (presents MODX video as a USB webcam on another device). I don't think there's enough critical mass to spend the time to do this as a kickstarter/similar project. I think Yamaha recognizes the value of an external screen (maybe external touchscreen too) - so I wouldn't want to work on something already in the dev. pipeline of the future firmware.

Video connector is not really an issue. Most monitor connector standards today will convert between each (vga to hdmi etc). The USB-to-Video (VGA or HDMI) devices themselves come with a bag full of conversion connectors typically. Most of the converters do not have VGA connectors - many are HDMI out with connectors to convert to various other standards.

The primary "issue" with an external monitor is touch capabilities. There is a very narrow set of requirements for this to work - and most touch monitors are not compatible. So much so that only one out-of-production monitor is the only one positively identified to work (video + touch).

Just about any monitor will work for video only assuming you have a compatible USB-to-Video converter. There are not many of these USB-to-video devices that will work either. It has to have a certain chipset. The ones that work have been documented - there are a handful. Feedback from the GenOS support team has been most complete in painting this picture. Given the parallels here (for video only) - it's safe to assume the list/direction given for GenOS video can be lifted and applied to Montage/MODX.

This is what I got from Yamaha Scandinavia about extern display on Genos.

As you may be aware, video-out connectivity is not part of the Genos specification. The built-in USB-to-host socket facilitates a “Yamaha Internal Factory Function” in order to show the screen on an external display. This requires usage of certain USB-to-video adapters using a DisplayLink chipset of DL-1x5 series (e.g. Displaylink DL-165, DL-195 or Diamond Multimedia BVU-165, BVU-195) in order for Yamaha to utilise this in presentations, and specific demos.
Availability of these adaptors varies country by country, and of course Yamaha cannot give any guarantees as to their function.
USB-to-video is not mentioned on the website, brochure, owner’s manual or any other documentation and it is not regarded as an official specification.

The Startech USB2VGAPRO2 is based on DisplayLink DL-195 display chipset, and so it works fine with Genos. However, it only has VGA output, and the price is kind of high.

My preferred one is the DisplayLink DL-165 chipset based Plugable USB 2.0 to VGA/DVI/HDMI display adapter, with DVI output, comes with VGA and HDMI output adapters, and much cheaper:

To be able to read the score on an external monitor i bought me a 'I-TEC DISPLAY ADPTER TRIO'.
This can adapt USB to VGA, HDMI or DVI. It uses the DL-195 chipset and is compatible with Yamaha Genos.

So on another forum somebody uses a 'I-TEC USB2VGA' adapter (DL-165), and for him the screen is even better than with the Tyros serie.

... this is based off the more recent Genos threads. If you look at the Montage threads (where this "started" ) - one can find both DL-195 (Startech USB2VGAPRO2) and DL-165 chipset adapters that have been verified to work.

This screen is not "interesting" because it's used for display only. You can display Montage/MODX on just about any screen assuming you have the proper displaylink interface. The part that is more difficult to get the stars aligned on is the touch interface which, thus far, only has a single monitor identified as working. My 55" TV set can display the screen with a proper USB to video converter. Just about any TV/monitor will do for display only.
