Hello - How do I turn local control on / off on the Reface CP? Per the MIDI spec this is possible but there is no reference manual posted for it so I am at a loss. Thanks for your help!
It will require a system exclusive message. The midi definition is in the file at this link. http://download.yamaha.com/file/65276 The data for CP commands are on pages 11-13. Please note that I do not have a CP but rather the reface DX but this document covers all reface models. Although I have made a reface DX editor in Lemur, I did not include local on/off commands.
Hi, there is a manual (it's a common manual for all Reface : reface CS/DX/CP/YC Owner's Manual [English / 3.4MB] ) and on the page 41 you have the local control tips .:
By default, local control is set to "on".
To set it "off" before to start your Reface
Press F2 + power button.
Keyboard settings are retained when the instrument is turned off.

Thank you, Joel. While it certainly can be set by a System Exclusive message, one is not necessary to turn LOCAL CONTROL = Off. Page 41 of the manual is a must read. The various commands are set by holding the appropriate key and powering the instrument ON... each by each. The reface will retain your selection until you either Factory Reset the instrument or change the setting manually.
The exception is the reface DX - which has a screen to select the majority of the page 41 commands. Press [FUNCTION] to find the various settings. The reface CS, CP and YC transmit on channel 1 (which is the default), or off. The exception is the reface DX, which can be set to transmit on any channel 1-16.
So say you wish to use the reface CS, CP or YC with an external DAW, you might want to make the following settings:
Local Control Off
MIDI Control On
Speakers Off
Power Off, hold F2 + Power On - sets Local Control Off
Power Off, hold E2 + Power On - sets MIDI Control On
Power Off, hold D2 + Power On - sets Speakers Off
Once made these settings remain. The units default to OMNI MODE ON (and will receive on any/all MIDI Channels). You can set it to receive exclusively on channel 1 by sending it a CHANNEL MODE Message cc124 from your sequencer. When this message is received, the reface will turn OMNI MODE OFF and set MIDI Receive Channel = 1.
If you require a different MIDI Receive Channel (other than 1) you can send a System Exclusive (Parameter Change) message to set the channel... The exception again is the reface DX which has a screen and a Receive Channel parameter.
Thanks for your extensive and informative answer.
But to avoid confusion about terminology: the MIDI message for LOCAL ON/OFF is NOT a System Exclusive message, but a special kind of CC message. (Controller number 122, value=0=Off, value=127=On). This message is part of the MIDI standard and is supported by many keyboards also from other manufacturers.
Other than CC (Control Change) messages, System Exclusive messages are messages that can be defined by the manufacturer to work exclusively with their product(s). That's why they are called "Exclusive".

And to avoid much more confusion. Yamaha products do not typically respond to cc122 as Local Control Off/On. Local Control is activated and deactivated by holding the lowest "F" and powering On the reface.
Control Change messages 120-127 are considered CHANNEL MODE MESSAGES. While cc122 maybe supported by many keyboards and other manufacturers, it is not supported here with reface.
