Hi all
I am old and not very tech savvy so please be extremely gentle with me
I've got a S90 and I've purchased the Spectrasonics Keyscape software as a treat for myself, being a Rhodes lover and not having the strength to carry one these days
After 12 hours, it has downloaded onto my laptop and the info appears to be in a STEAM folder ready to use
This is where the problems start
An extremely kind contributor to another board has given me this advice:-
1. Plug the USB cable from S90 to your laptop
2. Open your host/sequencer/DAW
3. Go into audio/MIDI properties of the host and check if MIDI input from your S90 is recognized there, it should be
4. Load Keyscape on a track and play away
As someone not familiar with any of it, can someone explain how I do this with my S90? I'm assuming the my S90 is my host - how do I "open" it?
How do I 'go into audio/MIDI properties'?
I'm at a loss and would love some layman's guidance
Thanks very much
Rich
Hi Richard,
We'd be happy to help you with what you need to know about your S90 and your computer. Technology and the tech jargon can be confusing (at first). But it all is much easier than learning to play (the toughest thing in all of this remains the manipulation of the black and white keys! Trust me.
We will take it slowly.
First, it is very (very) important to be accurate about the details. Computers are not smart, and they were not designed to do music. Well, not specifically. In order to "teach" a computer to do music there are additional programs you must add to the computer... these additions will help the computer interpret the messages coming from your keyboard. And the DAW software will help the computer convert time to musician's view of time. Computers naturally count in hours, minutes, and seconds... musicians count in measures ad beats.
We'll need some precise information from you. Here is a list of things we'll need to know to help you:
You say you have an S90, to be sure we are dealing with the right model please verify it is an S90, ...not an S90 ES, or S90 XS. There were three different S90's over the years. We need to be sure we direct you to the proper download location.
Next we need to know what type of computer you are using (it makes a difference) Windows or Macintosh.
We need to know what operating system you are running on that computer (Windows 7, 8, 10? OS X?)
This will help us direct you to the correct "driver"?
A "driver" is a bit of computer code which you will need to install on your computer that will "teach" your computer to translate the messages from your S90 into meaningful messages for the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).
The DAW is the software that can *record* and *playback* your musical performance data on your computer. Examples of DAW software would be Steinberg Cubase, Apple Logic Pro, Digital Performer, Sonar, Reaper, Studio One, etc., etc., etc. we will also need to know the version number of your particular DAW software.
You don't mention any specific computer, nor any specific DAW software.
The DAW software is considered the "host". It will be the host that allows the Spectrasonic software to run and be recorded on the computer.
The S90 will just be the keyboard controller - allowing you trigger ("play") the Spectrasonic Keyscape program.
Ultimately you will connect a USB cable (like the one that connects a computer to your printer) between the S90's "To Host" port and the computer.
Let us know.
Hi again
Thank you for your reply .... with the assistance of the mate of a mate I've now got the Keyscape software on my desktop - my laptop was only 32-bit whereas Keyscape needs 64-bit, so that was the first hurdle over
My current host is Ableton Live Lite 9, for which I have a 30 day trial
What I'm struggling with now is configuring my host software to utilize the Yamaha USB Driver I've downloaded for Windows 10
Can anyone help with this?
TIA
Rich
If you have installed the correct Yamaha USB-MIDI driver for your Windows 10 computer, current version is 3.1.4 (it comes in 32-bit and 64-bit formats, then you simply need to set it up according to the directions of your software. Each software has a Setup or Options or some such page where you can select the MIDI IN and OUT Ports.
The driver will show several numbered Ports, you want to select "Port 1" for both the MIDI In and the MIDI Out.
