How to selectively import performances from a large library?

In order to avoid wasting memory space to performances that add no value to me, and avoid an overload of similar performances, I want to selectively import performances from Expansion Libraries, rather than importing them fully.

As demonstrated in a TechTalk Live video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wZ2s5Fcc8o), you can import a library performance by selecting Utility - Contents - Library import – select library – search performance – select it - choose Import to user bank. This works fine for this example library of 3 performances, but not if you want to selectively add performances from libraries like MONTAGE_Expanded, which holds 256 performances. Even simply finding the right performances is extremely time consuming and error-prone.

The easiest solution would be the option to directly import a library performance. Also great would be if you could somehow mark library performances that you want to keep (similar to how you set Favorites), while working through these 256 performances. This would enable then importing these marked library performances to the user bank afterwards, in sort of a bulk action. It seems to me that there must be a practically feasible way to first try out performances of large libraries, and then selectively import the ones you like most.

Who can share a feasible way to selectively import library performances?

The first thing you should know is that you cannot "search" for the Library Perf whilst in Import Screen.

Best Solution here is a Pen and Paper with a list of Performance Names you want to import.

Next, whilst in the Import Screen, make sure the Sort Button (bottom left) is set to "Name".

Touch the Page button (bottom right) and use the Data Wheel to Scroll through the Library Pages whilst looking for your desired Imports. For each Performance you want to Import, click the square "name" box such that a blue tick appears in the Check box.

When you have selected all desired Performances, click the "Import to User Bank" button, bottom-centre-right of the screen.

One last note, if you hadn't already realised. The Import function is actually Importing all associated Library Waveforms, Arps and other "Library assets" uniquely required for that Performance into your User Bank, such that you can then Delete the Library, but the Imported Performance will still work.

This is not the same as "Storing" a Library Performance to your User Bank. In this case, the Performance will still work, as long as the Library is still installed. If the Library is deleted, and if the Performance relied on any "Library Assets", then some parts or all of the Performance will not work.

Yes, I have noticed that you cannot "search" for a Library Performance whilst in Import Screen. In fact, this is one of the reasons for trying to find a better way to work with large libraries. I understand the pen and paper, browsing and checking boxes solution, but I was (and still am) hoping that there would be a more practical way to selectively import performances.

This third party Editor makes this task possible on your computer - where you prepare a File that can Load to your MODX

The Melas "Waveform Editor" will allow you to manage your Library and User data elegantly.

Thanks Bad Mister and Dragos, very interesting. I've got some more learning to do!

What's most interesting is Yamaha not licensing this software (or making these features onboard) for all users, since both MODX and Montage are heavily memory restricted devices reliant on memory heavy samples for their non FM sound engine.

For Performances in a library with custom samples ...

I'm not sure JM tools can preview all of the waveforms so figuring out which are the keepers will possibly have to be from the name alone and possibly matching up with an advertisement video or demo recording that lists the same Performance.

If this is the case, then the (JM) tool will then just allow for you to remove a few steps in landing the keepers but might not help you determine which are the keepers.

You may be wondering why there isn't a better solution overall. I think the answer is more "complicated" than any answer you'll be offered.

Therefore, tools can help in some cases and they may serve to reduce the overall time spent. You'll still need to keep the process you use now at times depending on the source material. And it is unlikely to be improved past the available options today anytime soon. I'm looking forward to the day where the "filesystem" is improved.

I think part of the issue is that loading material from external sources is positioned as an event you would infrequently do and therefore the user experience involved is secondary. Seems to me like this approach lowers sales of add-on content and ends up hurting upsell potential for both Yamaha and the 3rd party providers. Part of this may be in an attempt to prevent piracy - but I wish a more creative approach can be employed which is compatible with a better user experience.

With any critique is an opportunity - so there's a land of opportunity here. Large ships turn slowly.

If you copy a performance, it'll copy the associated data with it (samples, arpeggios etc).

From the website:

Live Set / Performance Librarian

When you copy Live Sets or Performances from one file to another, the dependent User Waveforms/Arpeggios/Curves used by the Performances are copied automatically!
When you reorder or move Waveforms/Arpeggios/Curves on one file, all the Performances that are using them are updated automatically!

What I mean by this is that you cannot take a library and play the samples on your PC to "preview" -- maybe I should have said "audition" although that becomes a bit overloaded. More plainly - I'm not sure you can play the waveform to hear what it sounds like from the software in all cases.

I'm not talking about the impact of making changes to envelopes. I'm talking about having a library on your computer hard drive and NOT on your instrument and wondering what the sounds sound like without first loading the library onto your instrument.
