I've set up the Cubase Pro 8 Workaround as described here:
https://yamahasynth.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=471%3Acubase-pro-8-workaround-for-yamaha-vst-editor-users&Itemid=663

All steps make sense.
But I'm missing something when selectively activating a mix of stereo and mono busses.

Below is a routing experiment:
The Motif Rack XS hardware main outputs L & R are connected to my audio interface to monitor through speakers.

3 stereo busses (FW L-R, FW 1-2, and FW 3-4), and 4 mono busses (FW5,6,7,&,8) are made active. (1st attachment).
Drums routed to stereo L-R, bass to FW-5, Piano to FW-6, and organ to FW-7. (2nd attachment)
Cubase mono track meters indicated audio activity. But I don''t hear any sound unless all Motif sounds are routed through FWL-R. (3rd), (4th)

What missing that I don't hear the sound unless assigning output to Main LR in the Editor.
The numbers start to get confusing: Cubase busses and the assigned FW16E audio, the numbers appearing on Cubase Tracks. For instance, Mono-8 is FW-5.

Earlier today I was able to Export tracks one a time.
A desired workaround would be to route the FW outs to several audio track inputs so that I can convert several tracks of MIDI to audio in one pass.
Is this possible?

I am familiar with Cubase and other DAW for years but new to this way of working and doing my best to make sense of it.

Did I misunderstand, I thought you were using Cubase 7.5(?) Not that it matters, (although they are different) the External Instrument routing can be done with any top-of-the-line version of Cubase.

What missing that I don't hear the sound unless assigning output to Main LR in the Editor.

Your screenshot number 1 shows you have made the Inputs of Cubase available to receive data from the Motif-Rack XS, which is step one; but you have not activated the Outputs from the Motif-Rack XS. (Your other screenshots don't show me enough to gleen much about what you're doing, sorry.)

OUTPUTS are connected to those INPUTS. You activate the Motif-Rack XS OUTPUTS as follows:

(Cubase 7.5) On the VST INSTRUMENT tab you can activate any combination of Returns, as necessary. Just to the right of the ā€œeā€ (edit) icon is the output icon: [-->.
Click on this and activate the outputs you wish to use.

The Main L/R Outputs are always activated. You must activate each Output bus to which you wish to assign Parts. If not, you will not hear any sound.

Are you using Cubase 7.5 or Cubase Pro 8?

What you decide to name a track is up to you. Try using less confusing names... Most people rename the track by what's on it, not on what bus it arrived on. Why confuse yourself, call the track with the bass on it "bass" and the track with piano, "Piano"... Make life easy.

Hello,
I have both C7.5 and 8 on my system.
The external instrument workaround for C8 was being explored.

The audio returns as defined in C7.5 per your previous instructions are intact when I open the Editor in C7.5.
This being the case, wouldn't they be already set up for use in C8?

The Stand Alone version doesn't seem to have File/VSTi set up.

Best regards,
w

I'm not clear on what you are asking. You will need to activate the Outputs that you desire to use. Don't mix up the INPUTS (what you created on the External Instrument tab) with activating the OUTPUTS.
In Cubase Pro 8, look at the RACK INSTRUMENTS pop-up screen, where you selected the External Instrument Plugin > Motif-Rack XS, there should be a small arrow (chevron) that should give you access to a drop down menu with ACTIVATE OUTPUTS.

The Stand Alone version doesn't seem to have File/VSTi set up.

"Stand alone" is not running inside of Cubase and therefore naturally, there is no VSTi SETUP option. We set that up by creating the External Instrument Plugin routing.

Bad Mister,

Thank you for your patience.

I now have templates for
-Cubase 7.5 Editor as VST Plug-in
-Cubase 7.5 External Instrument
-Cubase 8 External Instrument.

After taking a break, then revisiting the procedural outlines, I walked through each step very slowly, making sure there was congruence between on-screen information and the written/image instructions. Each step/specific on-screen setting was written down on paper such as "MIDI OUT = "01: Motif-R XS VST - MIDI In" with the end result being communication as expected between hardware and software.

Time to enjoy the set ups.
