I have everything hooked up to cubase and all settings are good I think. The sound is registering into cubase and I did record one track so far as a test track. I noticed that while testing various performances, I only can get the sound playing from part 1 assigned on every performance, part 2 through 8 are there but silent. I am wondering what I am missing to get the sound coming from those silent parts? Thank you.

Hi, strange, i have record Main L/R output thru Montage USB and seperate track in audio without problems, also midi tracks with arp.

Check my post here, you have a dedicated Cubase Pro 8.5 template for Montage and a video (without comment but i have text in the post some informations), perhaps it help you to understand if you have miss one thing. :

I will comment the video and subtitle later, i hope in the next week).

You don't want to hookup "everything" to Cubase 🙂 just what you need.

A few key questions:

Are you recording MIDI or audio?
Are you set MIDI I/O mode = Multi or Single?
What channel or channels are you transmitting on?
What channel do you have Cubase set to play back on?

That should do it. Let us know.
I'll explain, once you reply...

Those are interesting questions 🙂 I know I'm recording midi. But it kind of just hooked me in with out me doing a whole lot (which was nice) but I can't describe it well I guess. I know I followed p.49 (connecting to a computer) of the owners manual through step 5. And also followed recording performance to CPU as MIDI w/ no arpeggio playback on p.51 (creating a song with a computer), but got kinda lost when it was going over midi channels 1 to 3. I am going try and look over cubase and the montage again and hopefully have more concise answers in the morning.

I am recording in midi. I am looking in everything to do with midi and can't find if it is multi or Single. In cubase, the only track I have says MIDI 1 and the channel is set to 1. The inspector says input routing is All MIDI Inputs and output routing is montage 1. Within [device setup] ---->MIDI Port Setup, there are three devices "windows MIDI" with I/O In, named montage 1 through 3, all active. And there are three "windows MIDI" with I/O Out, named montage 1 through 3, as montage 1 is active while 2 and 3 are inactive.

I hope this answers some of the questions. This is all new to me, so bare with me, I'm trying :).

Sorry, for the mystery, but as you can see there are going to be some things to consider when recording to Cubase.

Are you recording MIDI or audio?
Very basic and very important. Montage uses a single driver that has both a three Port MIDI component and a 32-in/6-out audio component. To just say, "I'm recording to Cubase..." Is not ever enough info, because it could be Midi or it could be audio. The difference is not trivial. And both will be a part of your workflow. If you've been used to recording just MIDI, and only finishing by mixing down to audio at the very end, Montage may force a change to that workflow... Not to worry it's pretty straightforward once you get over the initial difference.

Are you set MIDI I/O mode = Multi or Single?
The Montage can be set to transmit OUT on multiple Midi channels or just a single Midi channel. The reasons become clear as you encounter different type of Performances.
This MIDI I/O mode is setup in [UTILITY] > "Settings" > "Advanced".
Which one you choose will depend on the type of Performance you are recording. There are Performances where you want the data on separate MIDI channels, and there are Performances where you do not.

Quickly, say drums and arpeggios are involved, if your goal is to record and document the arpeggio event data, then obviously separate MIDI Out channels is a must. But if your playing a Multi Part piano, you don't want to have to edit data on multiple tracks, it is more convenient to have a single stream of MIDI events on a Single channel...particularly if you were planning to edit that data!

What channel or channels are you transmitting on?
If you were playing a Multi Part-Single Instrument like say "CFX Concert" and we're set to MULTI channels... Your soft strikes are on channel 1, your hard strikes are on channel 2, notes above G#5 are on channel 3, and the KeyOff noise is on channel 4... And you have discovered the wrong MIDI I/O mode for this type of sound. 🙂
Not your fault, just an important discovery about transmitting, recording, and how Cubase deals with multiple channels of info.

What channel do you have Cubase set to play back on?
I asked to make you realize, you are only reaching Part 1 of a multi Part Performance... The Channel setting you see on that Cubase MIDI track (in the Track Inspector) is how Cubase is sending the data back OUT.

All MIDI events generated by the Montage controller (note-ons, controller movements, etc) have a channel associated with it when generated. The Cubase channel setting rechannelizes the data on OUTPUT.

If you are transmitting from the Montage via Multiple Parts that you want to place on separate channels, then you must set the Cubase Channel setting to "ANY", not channel 1. "Any" means that "Any" channel coming in will be send back on the channel it came in on... Ideal for multi channel transmitting scenarios.

So set that Channel to "Any", now you will hear all the notes you recorded.

We will have the first of our Cubase and Montage series up by morning (Bad Mister's Blog)... You'll learn about the various types of Montage Performances and the way to go about capturing them. Until tomorrow... Thanks for the question.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. I am beginning to get a grasp of these concepts. I haven't checked your blog yet but I was curious if you had any suggestions on where to find really good examples of channels and multi part performances, maybe showing some pictures or diagrams of actual setups? I just really absorb information by looking and seeing 🙂 And I am in full throttle to learn. Thank you again.
