If I input a signal into the audio input from my electric guitar and play a rhythm ... is there any way that modx6 builds a rhythmic pattern with drums or with an arpeggio, based on the guitar rhythm that I'm playing?
At times it may seem like the MONTAGE/MODX can actually play along with you like it’s a living, breathing human being... but reality is, although the system can take an audio input from a device like an electric rhythm guitar, it does not “build” anything... it can “respond” to that input. You build what it does...
You can use any audio input to create an Amplitude pulse... the energy of that audio’s Amplitude (loudness) can be used to modify the Synthesis Engine. You can also use that energy to establish MIDI clock. But everything the MONTAGE/MODX contribute to your music, is based on what you Assign it to do. Technically, it doesn’t “build” anything... you do! You do by the routing you setup.
Say you record/playback a synth pad sound that you use to outline the chord progressions— just simple whole notes.
You could use the guitar’s Rhythm to ‘animate’ the synth pad sound... you could make it ‘duck’ down in volume each time you played a chord on the guitar. Or you could have the pad sound’s filter open or close with each rhythmic pulse. You could have the pad sound only audible when the rhythm pattern of the guitar strums are active. You could apply Effects that occur according to rhythm you play.
You can play along with a drum Arpeggio, you can have the guitar input interact with the Drum Kit... what will that sound like? You won’t know until you try it... these are Synthesizers... they let you “build” the results.
There are tons of things *you* can build, but make no mistake, it is *you* programming what is going to happen when the guitar signal arrives in the Motion Control Synthesis Engine (what we call the MONTAGE/MODX technology). Thanks for the question...
I wondered if the modx6 could give me to choose some drum pattern based on the rhythm and timing of a chord progression that I was playing with the guitar. By your answer I see that no. Thank you very much for your attention and for your time, Bad Mister.
If that pedal you won't name can output MIDI - then you can have it do the work and have MODX generate the sounds.
Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R
The Pedal is a Dig ***** Trio + Band Creator. Although it creates audio and not midi, I believe that the software engine that it integrates is made by PGMusic (Band in a Box) which, originally, works with midi.
Yamaha being a firm of such prestige and possessor of "knowtohow" I was deluded thinking that maybe Modx6 was able to do the same or something similar. I understand that I do not, I appreciate the attention given and for my part I end the consultation.
Hi Tino --
I've experimented with the Trio, so I know where you're at. MODX6 is my gig machine.
I don't think the MODX6 is targeted for that kind of use. Actually, Yamaha has invested R&D into music analysis of the type that drives Trio. However, they have not directly incorporated that technology into MODX or Genos/PSR keyboards.
Just for grins, you might want to consider or learn about the Yamaha Chord Tracker app. It is capable of analyzing a prerecorded song for tempo, measures/beats and chordal harmony. Chord Tracker is able to send the results of its analysis to compatible Genos/PSR keyboards, where the data drive an auto accompaniment. Not real-time, but still interesting.
As Phil (Badmister) mentioned, the MODX has an enormous built-in database of musical phrases, including rhythm patterns. The Motif XF Performances for Montage (MODX) library is a good way to get a taste of MODX's capability in this area. The Scene buttons switch between song sections (i.e., change up the rhythm and accompaniment patterns). I still find the Performances in this library to be inspirational. Seems like this would be a good starting point for explorations such as the kind suggested by Phil.
Hope this info helps -- pj
