I have a roland juno ds 61 and a yamaha modx8. i love the saxophone sounds from the modx and i want to use them on the roland ds via midi, but i want channel 1 to be the cfx concert and the other channels to sax and accordion sounds. can you guys help me on how to use the modx with midi. i recently bought the modx so im wondering. thanks in advance
Put the sax sound in, for example, part 4,. It will now respond to MIDI channel 4. Set up a Juno DS sound that transmits on channel 4, it will play the MODX sax sound. Make sure the DS is not transmitting on other channels that have MODX Parts (like channel 1) to make sure those sounds don't play as well. (Also, run a cable from Roland MIDI Out to MODX MIDI In, and set MODX to do MIDI I/O through the 5-pin MIDI jack rather than USB. ETA: And as Jason's post reminded me, also set the MODX MIDI I/O mode to Multi, )
... piggy-backing on the example where you want Part 4 to be your sax and receive using MIDI channel 4 independently from all other MIDI channels - you need one of the following configurations:
1) MIDI mode as Multi-Channel and Part 4 keyboard control is ON or OFF
or
2) MIDI mode as Hybrid and Part 4 keyboard control is OFF (and Zone control is OFF -- when zone control is ON, hybrid mode is defeated)
The point made here is that configuration of your keyboard has an impact on how your MODX responds to incoming MIDI. The MIDI mode (Multi, Single, or Hybrid) as well as state of Keyboard Control (only relevant for Hybrid mode) has an impact.
If you are using MIDI mode = single currently, then consider instead using MIDI mode = hybrid so you can utilize Parts with Keyboard Control = OFF by an external controller.
That said - you could also use Part 4 in Single-Channel mode with Keyboard Control=ON for Part 4. Configured as such: the receive channel would not necessarily be MIDI CH 4 (unless your transmit/receive channel happened to be set to 4) and also this Part would not be independent from your other Parts 1-3. You would still be able to use Part 4 but would probably need to target only the sax by note range and assign the sax to be some range around the extreme low end of the MIDI range (around C-2) or high end (around G8) while also pitch adjusting on MODX to have the notes fall in a natural range. Given the pitfalls here - I wouldn't recommend going this route - I am just saying it's within the realm of possibilities with careful programming.
