...the other, unplayable 8 parts have always bothered me because they need something tolerable to drive them.

For me (and many others) that (tolerability) moves DAWs and a PC/Mac out of the equation, just from a reach and speed/fluency/flow point of view.

This is not a comment on the need for DAW user usage proficiency, it's about the fact that no matter how hard you work at becoming the best possible DAW user, too much immediacy and flow is sacrificed with their workflows (all of them, they're all much the same in these terms of suckage) when compared to more optimal ways of doing composition and song/part construction in conjunction with sound design and recall, etc. If you don't understand this, at least somewhat, you're not going to grok why I'm suggesting having a look at the following device, which is good for you.

Perhaps the Polyend Play is the solution, as it also solves the sampler-is-missing issue, too:

External MIDI devices are the best way and this is one that has a few things going for it. I've got a novation 8-zone controller with sequencer that I can use. And with some impact on other controls, you can connect MIDI OUT to MIDI IN and tell Parts 1-8 to output to channels 9-16 which gives you all 16 Parts activated by keys at once.

Still, good to see alternatives to traditional controllers with other value add.

Yes, it looks like a cool box, though personally, I don't use sequences. For my own use, the best uses of "those other 8 Parts" is allowing sounds to be triggered from an external controller, without interfering with the combinations of sounds you're playing from the MODX' own keys. So for example, on my MODX7, I might want to attach a weighted controller to play its pianos on Part 9.

A big shortcoming here is that, if you change the Performance to load up a different set of sounds to play from the MODX' own keys, your piano disappears, unless you programmed the same piano sound into the performance you're switching to (and even then, it could glitch in the transition). There's an ideascale suggestion or two about this, i.e. keeping a Part "locked" in place while changing from one Performance to another, that would be nice to see to make this function more usable. https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/idea/285411 - feel free to upvote!

The other big shortcoming is that, as soon as you put a sound into Part 9 (or anything that isn't 1-4), you lose seamless sound switching, even if you haven't used more than 4 Parts in total. There's an ideascale suggestion for that, too. https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/idea/263538 = ditto!

especially this ^

Ideal would be a way to ensure any first four parts seamless with any next first four parts of any subsequent Performance. That way that's the "home" for transitions to subsequent Performances, whilst the other parts can be used via Scenes/Selection until it's time to switch to another Performance...
