Hi.

I'm the owner of the mx 88. I am thinkin of selling it and buy the modx 8.

I have a few questions.

Is the keybed the same mx88/modx8, or heavier/lighter?? (can’t find a store to try the modx 8, right now, in Denmark)

is there a ¨Quick reset¨ button, just like the mx88, or can you reset it to factory, if something goes wrong.??

About the knobs on mx88, sometimes you have to turn it forwards/backwards, before it works. What about the modx, is that the same??
Do you have to delete sounds, before you can download new? (Think, how much free space)

Best Regards 🙂

Søren

Someone else will have to field the MX88 vs. MODX8. Both specify the GHS keybed, so I would assume they are very close if not the same. That said, feel is subjective. A sales associate at the local music store claimed he preferred the MOXF8 keybed vs. the MODX8. So much that he thought MODX8 was a huge step backwards. I don't see it that way. It's very possible that the velocity curve was not adjusted to realize an "apples to apples" comparison. MOXF8 also lists the GHS keybed - which is why I reference it. Someone else is seeing a large difference between two GHS keybeds. There's also the new vs. worn-in factor. What I'm getting at is that even if there is some difference in the mechanism, key moldings, mass, etc - different hands are going to feel different result and are not going to agree. It's really up to you to find one and see what you think in front of the keyboard to get the real scoop.

There is not a dedicated reset button on MODX. However, there is an option in the menu system to initialize the keyboard. There are also various power-on key combinations which can initialize certain things. Example: hold down lowest key while powering on turns off auto-power-off. There are other key combinations.

Depending on how much has changed between the version you have and a new firmware version, applying a firmware update may serve as a form of factory reset as some version jumps will wipe all user content.

The feature where you need to move a controller to "catch" the current value is a feature across many generations and series (MO, Motif, Montage, MX). In Motif/MO/Montage you most often see this with the sliders although other controllers have this feature as well. There is an option to avoid resetting the controllers when you change Performances so the value of the current position of the controllers will not change when changing Performances. This will avoid having to "catch" the new value - since your controller values will be sync'd with your controller positions. This has side effects as you cannot program how the sounds "start" as affected by controllers. You have to be sure to manage this by setting the controllers to your desired position after switching Performances.

There's a reasonable amount of memory in MODX. If no custom samples are used - then you do not have to "worry" about memory space. Instead, the metric is count. You can fill MODX with 5,760 custom Performances before having to delete anything. This makes a few assumptions. 5,120 spaces for custom Performances are in one of 8 Library banks. Each of the 8 Library banks can hold 640 Performances. You can only populate each of the Library slots in one Load operation - so you have to have a Library file (X?L) ?=7 or 8 with 640 Performances inside in order to "max out" the Library slot. You cannot add or remove from a library slot once you've loaded the Library. The only way to modify a Library slot is to delete the entire slot. There is a user area of 640 Performances. This area you are free to edit Performances individually, delete individual Performances, [STORE] a new User Performance, etc. The User area you are free to do operations more atomically (one Performance at a time). The idea is that once you've "perfected" a Performance in your scratchpad user area - you can collect up all of the "keepers" and install them in a more permanent location - the Library bank. Now, if you use custom samples - MODX has 1GB of sample storage. Typically user content does not consume much sample storage. This will be consumed primarily by installing commercial or promotional sound libraries from Yamaha and 3rd party content providers. The content usually has published how much sample memory is required - so you can do the math to determine how many will fit or how much sample memory will be left over after installing one or more.

No... unlike the MX, the MODX uses endless encoders, so they always immediately work from their current position, no need to move a knob until it "catches" the current setting as on the MX.

They are identical actions, period.

is there a ¨Quick reset¨ button, just like the mx88, or can you reset it to factory, if something goes wrong.??

On the MX88 you can hold [SHIFT] + [SELECT] to quickly initialize a Performance, actually this action restores the principal acoustic Piano sound to Part 1 of the Performance. It restores the first Performance “MX Categories”... this is what you do when you wish to begin a Performance creation on the MX88; On the MODX you would begin by initiating a [CATEGORY] search, then touch “Init”
You can start with one of four “Init” templates:
“Init Normal (AWM2)”, “Init Normal (FM-X)”, “Init Drum (AWM2)”, “Multi/GM”
Or you can begin with any of the more than 2100 Factory (Preset) programs as a starting point.

If you are trying to find similarities, you will still need to spend a little time with the MODX Owner’s Manual to learn its routines. You will find some similarities. In the MX88 you can link Parts 1&2 to create splits or layers, while the non-linked Parts are selectable as individual Parts.
In the MODX you can link as many as eight Parts (1-8) to create your splits/layers, while the non-linked Parts are selectable as individual Parts.

The MX88 has one Bank of 128 Programs for User creations
The MODX has 45 Banks of 128 programs.
