I'm wondering where people always find money to buy newer synthesizers... Do they rob banks?

I considered becoming a professional musician in the 1970s while I was in Computer Science graduate school. But one night I went to see Pat Metheny, who it turned out was playing in a crappy, depressing bar somewhere out in Nowhere, New Jersey. I looked at what someone like him was having to do to make a living as a musician and started thinking about where I might end up playing, since I'm nowhere near as good as he is. What crossed my mind looked like the scene from The Blues Brothers where they're playing in a bar that has chicken wire across the front of the stage so that when the "audience" throws beer bottles at the band, the guys in the band don't get hit. I thought about it for a while, and decided to stay in graduate school.

Now I'm a retired software engineer doing music for the sheer fun of it. I'm sure that I earned more money writing code than I ever would have as a musician. As Clint Eastwood once said,"A man's got to know his limitations"...
