Not an unfamiliar arc of product lines.

Interesting firmware additions. Scene chaining. More groove options - some taken from MODX (additions in MODX that had not yet been added to Montage) and some new stuff.

Synthesizers with the announcement of MONTAGE White and OS v3.0 update.
This new firmware update features an all new pattern sequencer featuring with up to16 tracks can be edited and saved to 128 slots.

Sequencer now has some editing features - nice stuff in there.

Sounds like new content (Performances) from "new" Yamaha sponsored musicians.

New effects, new sound "stuff". Sounds like firmware v3.0 is a bag full of goodies.

Wave folder, mini filter, mini booster, extended LFO.

... features added to Montage v3.0 are also available in MODX new firmware v2.0

Dom's mini filter demo does show how having only 128 values in superknob (or any other controller modulating the filter) results in "stepping" instead of smooth transitions. This goes back to the effects themselves (parameters and controllers alike would need higher resolution to make this smooth). But still cool sounding within certain boundaries.

Comments mention/claim Montage OS 3.0 available at 10PM EDT 9/22, MODX OS 2.0 available at 10PM EDT 10/24

Keyboard control is now included in scenes (per Blake during interview)

Hans-Peter's demo shows a knob labeled "ANFM". Speculation: AN Engine? ... not likely (what ANFM means) - all shown PARTs labeled as "FM-X" and would think a new engine would have a new emblem. UPDATE: No big reveal of any engine. Not sure that is in the cards today.

Scene chaining was my only submission to ideascale. It seems like all the 'sequencer haters' on this forum need to recognize that they were wrong about what users want- because what users wanted all along was what we got. Thank you Yamaha for listening to what actually matters🙂 . With this addition, the Montage now becomes a strong competitor to the Fantom. Very good indeed.:)

Comments in the video still have feedback that the changes are not innovative enough. I think there will always be those inside and outside the circle of content. Not all v3.0 features have been announced (or fleshed out) yet.

CP73/88 also got interesting features and new sound content. Wondering if we'll see the CP uprights in new Montage Waveforms/Performances. Still more live feeds to come.

From what I saw and heard the editing is more for an ear perspective rather than eyes, which is better than not having a the new functions at all for sure. One improvement I can think of is adding a randomize function for velocity swing. Maybe the algo is randomized already, but if it isn't it should be- or give us probability option/function of the velocity changes. All digital grooves need a little soul imo:D

- Extended LFO sounds fabulous! Love it.

- The minimoog filter sounds really good. Except, was that filter stepping in the demo? I've used and repaired Minimoogs and that didn't sound like it was simply stepping through a harmonic series. I hope that was just a parameter offset and that internal parameters can modulate it smoothly. In any case, I'm happily surprised that a new filter model has been introduced. It's been a long, long time since Yamaha have added a new filter (as opposed to updates to existing filter models).

- Wavefolder is very, very welcome as a sound design tool.

- Nice to see some classic midi data manipulation jobs and a portion of the "Grid Groove" from the RM1x/RS7000 finally resurfacing again after 20 years.

Curious if it will get the Motif PATTERN Edit page:

Soul options is mainly given in clock ritard/advance. But I haven't seen the entire picture (no v3.0 loaded on my own board). It would be cool if these parameters could be destinations so you can motion control move them around. But have to dig in later.

Yes, the clock-slide/timing control functions are there, but velocity control is also imperative to humanizing a motif. Hopefully that algo is randomized or will be. I'm gonna check out some more info on everything.

Not sure note-by-note editing of gate/length/etc. are available as the screenshot of Motif. I think mainly these are job functions that apply to a series of notes. But still more granular than previously available with the Performance Recorder.

I think whatever comes in this update: It is clear that both the Montage and the MODX get new updates. That's the great news. It was a long waiting but finally it is clear that this is not a finished EOL product line. I was always assuming that based on BM's and some other comments that there will be further updates. Nice that I was not proven wrong. As I said before, I am not interested in the sequencer. But I am glad it comes because it will make the Montage attractive for more people. Which is a win for the ecosystem! So hopefully it is good. There will of course be people for which it is not enough, but that's unavoidable.

The opinions about "finished", etc were overly pessimistic - but the "white" version has been historically a marker on the down-swing of support. Still watching to see if a new engine is the surprise finale. If not, then I would think this would come before everything is "done".

Interesting, did not know that. However, it does not have to be that way, let's see... 😀

Michael Patrick's demo was great. Not sure the click track was supposed to be running the whole time (after the string intro). If it wasn't - then using the sequencer for live use may be tricky to squelch that click track if you forget.

... adding information to 1st post. Interesting sarcastic - "we don't know anything" -- about what else is to come in terms of focus of VCM moving from mixing consoles to the musical instrument line. Which means new modeling things to come for synths.

From my POV this looks like an excellent update. If you can really set the keyboard control via scenes I would be happy with just that, but a 'mini' filter is tasty icing. I never really felt a lack of sequencer on the Montage as I prefer to 'just play' it, but the pattern sequencer does look like something I might actually use - more like a looper than something like a Beatstep sequencer (which I never got on with).

Looking forward to having a play with it!
