A new one is coming. Yamaha has registered a new trademark AN-X

A new synthesis engine for MONTAGE or a new synthesizer?

A new synthesis engine, I'd say, based on the FM-X naming.
But that doesn't mean it'll go inside the Montage.
It can be an updated AN1X engine with MotionControl.

Hopefully, if this engine goes into a future flagship, it'll be along FM-X, not replacing it.

Yeah that does appear to be the same naming convention as FM-X
If it go into the Montage, it will definitely be in addition to FM-X and not replacing it! 😉

And if that were the case, I wonder would they have it so that you either use FM-X or AN-X, both not both at the same time? Or would they be able to program the OS to share the polyphony between the two and be able to have both at the same time (along with AWM2 as well)?

My guess would be that, for both engines, the Effects (inline Part Effects) are capable of chewing up more than the playback of samples, filtering and primitive LFO operative abilities of AWM2 and the highly optimised wave 'creation' (lookup and fit) and summing that is Phase Synthesis with its single Filter per voice - and the primitive envelopes of both.

Which means that a simulation of analogue synthesis is likely to be less than half the polyphony of FM-X, possibly a quarter, on the respective hardware, and might only be bi timbral on the MODX and quad timbral on Montage, due to the costs of doing better, more simulated filtering, and having (what should be) much better envelopes and LFO syncing.

I think we'd be lucky to get 16 voice AN-X polyphony on MODX and double that on Montage.

I'd be happy if it was half that.

Someone on one of the google results for AN-X searches showed that there's at least a 12 month gap between Yamaha registering a name and its product release.

So don't expect anything anytime soon.

And not in the Montage/MODX.

FM-X was registered 2016-04-23, and the Montage was available in the stores a month or so after that if I remember correctly.

So, if this is a Montage update, I'm pretty sure it will be released in the near future.

The registration does seem to be playing into tea leaves broadcasted a couple years ago - EDIT: when Yamaha was surveying users what engine they would like to add. Who knows. I appreciate those who are looking for these things and communicating what they find.

We already discussed this here a few years ago before you barged in.

AN-X on montage is a doubtful long-shot:

It's all in here... this gets shockingly good, if X means FX:

And yes. I get the joke! It's good!

Reading my tea leaves, this could potentially be Yamaha unintentionally revealing to us that they have the AN-X engine ready and are adding it to the Montage in the next OS update, sometime in the next couple of months (I predict September)..!?

Yeah, I remember those discussions and reading through that article.
I also remember that Saul on the https://www.yamahamusicians.com/forum forum, said that he was talking to one of the lead developers of the Montage, and asked about the possibility of adding an VA engine to the Montage, and the developer said that it wasn't impossible or he couldn't rule out the possibility (something to that affect) ... so, there could still be hope for those who are looking for a VA engine in the Montage. Personally, I don't need a new VA engine, as I can make any sound I want with the current 2 engines, but I wouldn't mind seeing others who do want VA to have it added in a future update! 😉

"-X" stands for expanded. For FM-X it's a bit of a misnomer given FM-X is actually a subset of FM available on the FS1R (not "expanded" ). I don't count the motion sequence or motion control part as "-X" because AWM2 has all of those new things and it's not called AWM2-X.

If we assume the "AN" in "AN-X" denotes some virtual analog technology (which is reasonable to assume) - then the "-X" part doesn't necessarily mean there is "more" than what was previously available for this technology. Maybe so, maybe not.

If this is getting rolled into a reface then, keeping with the Reface's previous keyboards, there may be some subtle "twist" in functionality. Primarily to consolidate the controls into a smaller form factor and still be relevant.

We'll see.

They didn't seem to use fancy names/trademarks for the tech inside Refaces, though...

Reface DX's FM engine was more "original" than FM-X, yet it didn't have any particular name.
It seems that marketing names for engines are preferred for flagships.

Only Roland is silly enough to think the Refaces were worth continuing.
