I have had a Motif XF 8 with firewire for a long, long time. I bought a new laptop. But now I realize It has no firewiree or LAN connection, Just a Thunderboldt 4 USB C Port. Are there any old school Motif XF 8 folks left here that might be able to help, me figure out how to get firewire to work through thunderboldt 4? or maybe suggest a better/different forum I should be asking on?

All I can suggest is that if you search the internet for 'using firewire with thunderbolt' you will find plenty of videos that may give you the info you need.

You didnt' say what kind of laptop of OS you have so I can't say if the adapters will work for you or not.

I think the wall you're going to hit, most likely, is the "age" of your computer's operating system. The drivers that I believe are a necessity are only compatible with 32-bit operating systems. Pick your poison (Apple OS or Microsoft OS). All modern operating systems are 64-bit now. If you have an old 32-bit version of windows (or OSX) then you should be able to clear this problem and install the drivers.

Running an older OS in a VM won't work either since I'm not aware of any hypervisor (VM software) that will pass the guest OS (i.e. older OS) the firewire port. USB is supported as passthrough but not firewire.

Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R

What virtualization software do you recommend for better firewire support in a VM?

I'm not aware of any. Oracle's VirtualBox doesn't support it and Oracle has deprecated the FireWire module from the Linux versions.

How to use it in detail?

For better FireWire support in a virtual machine (VM), I recommend PCIe passthrough using VMware ESXi or Proxmox. These platforms allow you to pass hardware (such as a FireWire PCIe card) directly to the guest operating system, offering near-native performance. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Install VMware ESXi or Proxmox on a compatible machine.
  2. Ensure your hardware supports IOMMU/VT-d for PCI passthrough.
  3. Install a FireWire PCIe card in your host.
  4. Configure PCI passthrough in the hypervisor settings and assign the FireWire card to your virtual machine.
  5. Install the necessary drivers for the FireWire card in the guest OS.

This method provides better support for FireWire compared to software-only virtualization solutions.

To connect your Motif XF 8 via FireWire to your new laptop with Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, you can use a FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter. Look for a Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire adapter, as Thunderbolt 4 is compatible with Thunderbolt 2. Additionally, ensure you have the correct FireWire cable. If you need further assistance, consider checking forums like Gearslutz or the Yamaha Synth forums, where many Motif users share tips and solutions.
