I'm following the pdf for the VST plugin instructions and have come across the line

9. Click the [Auto] button then all the audio ports are assigned automatically.

However I have no [AUTO] button on this screen (see attached screenshot)

Not only is the [AUTO] button missing but so are the MOXF Ports!

First thing we need to verify that you have the driver for your particular computer.
And that that driver is installed and you are connected to the MOXF via a USB cable.
Did you install the REMOTE TOOLS?
Also that you are running Cubase AI 7 (not Cubase LE, not Cubase Element) but Cubase AI 7.

If you need additional help - please post back with your computer Type and operating system (everything really does start there).

Hi - I've tried uninstalling the driver and the moxf tools and then layering them back on again (usb driver first, moxf tools second) but I'm still back in the same place (no AUTO button)
I've installed remote tools and checked the USB connection between the MOXF8 and my mac book.

I read the installation instructions pdf and checked that the usb driver installed ok by checking in "Audio Midi Setup"

Whenever I open the VST Editor, I get a "Port Open Error" for about 10 seconds. I play keys on the MOXF8 and the keys in the VST light up, but can't hear any sounds.

When I go into [File] -> [Setup] I get a warning that "ports within the host app have not been set yet".

I'm using "Cubase LE AI 7" 7.0.6 build 2231
VST Editor version 1.6.3
Mac OSX 10.9.4

We can help you get unconfused but we need to be precise. And need to verify a few things.

Both are out of date. Take the time and update your Cubase AI7 to version 7.0.7 (steinberg.net)
and update your Editor to version 1.6.4 ( http://download.yamaha.com)

For example, you mention the driver but never mention it by name and version number. You are using a Mac so go to the SYSTEM PREFERENCES icon in your DOCK. You will find an icon for the "Yamaha Steinberg USB" Driver. Please click that icon and report what it says. It should read V1.8.6 (If not, update your Driver as well). Part of computer-world is that word UPDATE... particularly any time you having issues, it pays to verify your exact version... it is some times (make that 'most times') critical.

When you launch Cubase you are given a choice, please make sure you launch CUBASE AI7. Please verify and let us know that have launched AI7 and not LE7, I'll stress this point again for emphasis: AI7 (also you will want to update your version of Cubase to AI 7.0.7)

You should get a box that is for selection of "ASIO DRIVER SETUP"
Select "Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO" > Yamaha MOXF6/MOXF8 > click "OK"

The rest of the Cubase AI7 boot up will take place.
If you do not get these steps, STOP and post back here.

If all is successful up until this point: You will want to launch a Project. Cubase will arrive at the new PROJECT screen - please select the "EMPTY" template, listed under the "MORE" category

You will then be requested to direct the Project to a Folder somewhere on your computer or you can opt to use the DEFAULT LOCATION. Do so.
You should now have a new blank Cubase Project.

Next you can setup the MOXF VST
In Cubase: Go to DEVICES > VST INSTRUMENTS > the Instrument Rack will appear.
In the first slot that reads "No instrument" - click and select "EXTERNAL" > MOXF6/MOXF8 VST

This will create a VST INSTRUMENT folder containing a sub-folder for the MOXF VST - It will have an AUTOMATION LANE and an AUDIO LANE for your MOXF. Immediately you will be asked if you want to create a MIDI Track for this instrument. Do so.

On the EDITOR's window click on FILE and check that your MIDI Ports are setup: FILE > SETUP:

Next check that you AUDIO Ports are setup: FILE > VSTi SETUP:

If you get stuck, please tell us exactly on which step you get stuck. If you do the above methodically, you should either reach success or you will define where the problem exists. Let us know.

I updated Cubase to 7.0.7 and installed 1.6.4 version of the VST editor (I also checked the correct version of the USB driver 1.8.6)
I didn't get the dialog boxes when I launched Cubase - and was going to post back here, but I had a bit of a play and...
... I now have an [AUTO] button!!!!

Also, the integration between my MOXF8 and Cubase is a lot less confusing to me now!!! What I do on my MAC gets reflected on my MOXF and vice versa!!

I still need to set up an audio input bus to record from a microphone - but certainly my immediate problem is solved

We have step-by-step tutorial for setting up and recording AUDIO. In PART 1 you are taken through the must basic recording of audio. In PART 2 you shown how to record the MOXF and a vocal simultaneously to two separate tracks of Cubase
