Attempting to create a 'thicker' clavi I chose the Preset 'Clavi/Toy EP Duo' - in the 'Keyboard - Clavi' category (8 Parts) and deleted Part 8 (keyclick), then un-muted every other Part in Scene 1 (leaving Scenes 2 - 7 unchanged). Then 'STORE' - Rename - Done - Save as New Performance - confirm ... back to the 'USER' Bank. My new Pf was there, and worked as expected - until I changed Scenes, after which I found Scene 1 had reverted to the original settings. Tried this same thing 3 times to make sure I was making no mistake in the procedure.

Is it not possible to modify Scenes? Is this normal? If not, can anyone say where I'm going wrong, please?

You modify a SCENE by making your changes, then hold [SHIFT] + [SCENE X]
Then press [STORE] to store the Performance.

The Scene must be updated and stored before you Store your Performance.

Ah! Thank you BM. I'll note that in my Procedure files - couldn't find anything in the Owner's Manual. Simple - when you know how!

1) Load "montage_en_om_v102.pdf" into a PDF reader. i'm using Adobe Reader DC (2017 release)
2) Search for "scene" - in adobe, I press Ctrl-F, then type "scene" and return
3) ... keep searching until something interesting comes up. I pressed "F3" to repeat the search 3 times. Which, on the 3rd "hit" showed the table of contents "Using the scene function" on page 29. I then clicked on the "29" because it's a link to that page.
4) On page 29, all the text needed to use the scene is there.

Talks about turning memory on/off for different functions, how to get to the scene settings - and saving the scenes:

NOTE
You can also change Scene Settings from any other operation
displays. To do this, press one of the SCENE [1] – [8] buttons
while holding down the [SHIFT] button. Scenes 1 to 8 are
assigned to each button.

There's also a reminder that if you change scenes of a performance (like save a scene) - this DOES NOT modify your performance with the new saved scene. If you wan the performance you are currently using to have the new scene assignment, you need to save (STORE) the performance. From the manual:

NOTICE
If you select a different Performance or turn off the power
without storing your edited Performance, all the edits
you’ve made for the Scene will be erased.

... now the manual above for [SHIFT] + Scene 1-8 for store is not worded crystal clear. No problem, I press "F3" to search for the next mention of scene - and after a few presses, page 55 shows:

[SHIFT] + SCENE [1] – [8] Stores SCENE 1 – 8 in SCENE [1] – [8] buttons.

That's clear enough.

Hello Jason - it's the usual problem - knowing exactly the right question to ask! I had assumed that storing the completed Pf (including modified Scenes) that Montage would store ALL the mods, including the Scenes. It doesn't, as I found out (the hard way), but saving the Scenes is so easy it's not a problem, and I now automatically save each Scene every time I mess about with it. Which is often, as I find that having up to 8 variations on a Pf is very handy! Now fiddling with jam session groups ...

The other gotcha, as previously pointed out, is that "saving" a scene doesn't automatically save the performance. So keeping it straight what does what is important. The general recipe I always follow (assuming I want scene changes to be permanent) is to:

1) Modify parameters I want included in an initial scene - meaning the scene I want loaded when I switch to the performance I am editing
2) Press [SHIFT] + Scene # Button to save the scene (usually Scene 8 since I typically start with the last scene and work my way back to scene 1 - scene 8 is closer to the middle of the keyboard and easiest to get to)
3) [STORE] the performance as a paranoia step to be sure I don't lose anything
4) Now that my "home scene" is setup, I make necessary changes to the performance to prepare for what I want to store in my second scene (usually scene 7)
5) Press [SHIFT] + Scene # Button to save the second scene
6) Press the Scene # I assigned to the "home" scene - the one I want active when the performance loads
7) [STORE] the performance ...
8) continue with step 4-7 until all scenes are saved.

Some key points: I always switch back to the scene I want active when the performance is loaded before [STORE]'ing the performance. I always store the performance after saving a single scene so I don't forget to do this later and also for paranoia. Use of the "home scene" as a step also will put the levels of everything back to the initial state. This helps when scenes are used to mute/unmute PARTs.

Right - in this case documentation did serve up something useful by searching for something generic (just the word "scene").

Hello Jason - I've just started to do that! Using Scenes as an integral part of a Pf ... I've been largely ignoring them up to now, but they are a very useful enhancement at very little cost (once you know how!). Montage continues to surprise with its capabilities ... I like your 'recipe' plan! That's a good idea and I will pinch it immediately and unashamedly ...
