Hi, I'm a Loyal Yamaha Supporter and own Many Many New and Old Yamaha Synths and Products..I've beed asking them to make a Montage Rack every since it came out to use with My MOXF7WH.. Now they have a MODX,Still no Rack..Anyway,I would like to know If the MODX can Be used as a Sound Module and Have NO Midi Issues... Will it Respond From My XF7 as its Controller So I have Aftertouch, and a Excellent Keybed to Play it from..I really don't Want another Keyboard but the MODX6 is Small and I can fit it in My Home studio,Barely.. So anyone who has a MODX and a Good MIDI controller, 😉 please give your HONEST Opinions and Tips... Thanks YamahaJim....

Hi, my Montage is perfectly under contorl of my Motif XF8, no midi issue.
I use master mode to control thru zone the midi parts i want from Montage.
It will be the same thing for the MODX, i have made some few test, no problem.

It's difficult to respond without qualifications. A blanket "no issues" is difficult to respond to because there are likely scenarios which can cause issues for some and have no issue for others.

For instance: MotifXF has no set of buttons which can be reassigned to remotely press the scene 1-8 buttons on MODX. Therefore, the facility to use local buttons on Motif XF in order to MIDI control the MODX scene buttons is not there.

However, maybe that's not something you would ever do?

I can probably "dream up" of even stranger scenarios you may never encounter.

Instead of leaving it wide open - why not generate as complete of a list as you can of what you need to work through MIDI.

Your list thus far:

1. Respond to aftertouch. Yes, this will be fine. Reference:
https://www.yamahasynth.com/ask-a-question/does-the-modx-series-respond-to-aftertouch-over-midi

2. ... and an excellent keybed from which to play it from. Yes. This is less a question about MODX and more a question about the Motif's keybed. I assume it's excellent for you. Otherwise, the keys will map to MODX PARTs. Motif XF can address 8 zones which is enough to play every Performance preset in MODX. Even the local MODX keyboard can only address 8 of its own PARTs at a time.

That's all you have expressed thus far as potential problems.

I'm Talking about Midi issues.. and I'm referring to the Modx6 and 7..The 8 has a weighted and the 6 and 7 have the MX keybed we all know what that feels like..Anyway Im tring to use it as a useful replacement as a Rack version of a Montage.. I need HANDS ON Answers... Not Promo evaluations..Mabie I can get Guitar Center let Me Midi it to something and not tell me "It Does Everything,Why do you need to Midi it?" Then I'll decide.. and I know it responds to Aftertouch,Ive read the Reference Manual and Owners Manual..

I think Joel is right in that the MODX and the Montage are virtually the same thing except for slightly different specs and a different hardware package. So I would not expect any differing experience from Joel's with the Montage.

But also, I have controlled the MODX successfully without any issues from the Montage. And vice versa. I would count the Montage as a decent MIDI controller, so the HANDS ON answer is "yes". But I agree with Jason that this cannot be a promise that everything is working as you expect.

Can the MODX be connected through USB to a MIDI controller (such as a wind or mallet controller) that has only a USB MIDI class-compliant device interface (a USB "B" connector), and no traditional 5-pin-DIN MIDI? From the manual, it looks like this is not possible, and that the MODX USB host port is only used for mass storage. So the only was to do this would be use a USB-to-MIDI converter?

This would be a useful feature, since most of the newer small specialized MIDI controllers only have USB "B" connectors, and no MIDI connectors, since I guess the manufacturers expect most customers to connect them to a computer's USB host port. But it sure makes things simpler for working musicians, no external devices, extra cables, and power supply. A future upgrade to the MODX (it's only software, ha ha) ???

@David:

Not possible. You've got to go through a computer if your external device only has a MIDI connection as its USB interface. There are also hardware devices that convert USB to 5-pin DIN.

I know that you can used external hardware devices - I've used the (expensive) Kenton USB MIDI Host, and built a couple of far-less-expensive ones ($25) using the Hobbytronics MIDI host boards...but it sure is convenient connecting a Pearl malletSTATION directly to a Korg KRONOS with a single USB cable...both the KRONOS host end and the malletSTATION device end are USB MIDI class-compliant, and the malletSTATION is then powered over USB too...

I do agree it would be nice for the USB to Device port to support USB-only MIDI devices such as Kronos and (some) other keyboards support. Korg has many accessories (pads, etc) as part of the ecosystem that they support. Yamaha has fewer possible accessories which may explain part of the difference in product positioning.

...so this suggestion can be passed on to the appropriate development / support people at Yamaha, and maybe we'll see it in some future upgrade (?)...my MODX is supposed to be shipped next week, but I'm sure any upgrade would take a lot longer (just kidding, of course)...

Yamaha does (or did) seem to be behind other manufacturers in incorporating USB MIDI class compliance; I wasn't very interested either until all of those USB-MIDI-only devices started appearing...

You can submit the suggestion to https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com if there already is not one submitted.

In the "tip" category - reassign the CC assignment for ribbon on the Motif XF from 22 to 16 (decimal) so that ribbon on your Motif XF will match the new default for the ribbon's CC on MODX.

If you do not do this, the ribbon on Motif XF will move one of the assignable knobs (#6) instead of affecting the ribbon.

This sprung from another recent thread where a user is using an ES-series synth which has related assignments for the ribbon controller.

Jason is right, "no issues" is impossible to define, without knowing everything you want to do. But a MODX is essentially just what could be in a theoretical rack module plus a set of keys, and it won't matter whether you use its own keys or some others attached via MIDI. There is an issue if you wanted to play some of its sounds on its own keys while playing other sounds from the controller's keys... but of course, that's not something you could do on a rack module anyway, since it wouldn't have its own keys in the first place.
