Dear All,

I am a beginner to keyboards as I own a PSR I-455 and now I am planning to buy montage as I want to enter into FM synthesis.

But I am having questions like if i buy MONTAGE, how to connect it to speakers because till now I am using in-built speakers of my PSR.

And in some four videos in which Mr. Bad Mister demonstrated for MONTAGE in youtube titled "Yamaha Montage In-Depth Review with Phil Clendeninn", at the end of the video, they will display the name of the other ancillary equipment used.

One of the Video url is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4mMMp9thJg

In those videos, it shows only the synth, Direct Box, Pro Tools & Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. But nothing on the speakers and how it is connected.

I am posting the screenshot below.

I request you guys to guide me how to buy the required ancillary equipment to connect montage to Monitor Speakers.

Other question is "Do I need a mixer for MONTAGE". I will use it to play live at home.

Kindly guide me in this regard.

Cheers.

The video doesn't list any speakers because the video sound used a direct line recording and did not make use of speakers even though there must have been some speakers as a reference.

The sound reinforcement products you eventually purchase will depend on your budget weighed against your goals in terms of acceptable results. The least expensive route will be headphones. Of course there are very expensive headphones but more reasonable results with headphones can be arrived at with a lower price point than two loudspeakers.

Yamaha demos Montage (including music store displays) with two HS series monitors and an HS series subwoofer. You see the same arrangement at NAMM.

Search for JBL in the forum to get more opinions on setups.

Note that in a pinch, I've also run my pro keyboards through a $20 "boom box" or a home stereo or bass amp. So you may have something already that, although not ideal for sound quality, will "work" provided you get proper adapters for the connections.

Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R

The two most popular speakers for home users seems to be:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HS7

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LSR308

Or you can look at any of the other powered studio monitors that you wish on that site (or others).

You will also need a pair of 1/4" TRS cables to connect the speakers to the Montage.

We recommended to music stores a basic minimum system for displaying the Montage. This included a pair of Yamaha HS7s or HS8s, if the smaller HS5s were used we recommended the matching Sub-Woofer. In most stores you will see Montage configured with at least this level of monitor speakers. To connect a synth with this sonic capability to a typical keyboard amp would be a crime... many of the samples and many of the effects are stereo, and as a synth it is naturally full range.

If you get HS7 6.5" or the HS8 8" you may not need a sub-woofer at all... depends on your personal preference, your neighbors and your budget. Do remember Monitor Speaker systems get better and better as you go up in price (right up until you run out of money).

In the US the best selling monitors (which does not make them "the best" ) but does make them the very best at their price point, are the HS5s... it is my opinion that the 5" benefits from getting the matching sub woofer... the Montage Left/right Outputs go to the sub, it does the crossover and divides the Left and Right Outs in what is referred to as a 2.1 system.

The HS8s, again, my opinion, can be used without the sub.

Are the Yamaha MSP7 Studio monitors a lot "better" than the HS7/HS8?

As general rule, until you reach the threshold of diminishing returns, is the more reserve power and the greater the frequency range the better results you'll get. The lower the harmonic distortion the better. Let the sub do the sub work and let the other drivers cover everything else. On most of these presets a sub brings everything to life like adding another dimension. Research top studio monitors and their reviews such as sound on sound. Spending more will yield a better result to a point. I was in guitar center and they had every synth connected to a guitar amp or pair of cheap monitors. Everything sounded really bad but at least everything was on a even playing field. Clean, crystal clear reproduction is going to cost some bucks. I'd recommend 8" drivers with a sub system and a wave guided profile.

I have the HS7. I'm very happy with them and their Bass.

I have the smaller version of these Presonus Sceptre with sub for my church rig and I use the JBL LSR4328P with sub for my home rig. These are a step up from the standard Yamaha system.

Hello Dinu - you have had good advice in the preceding Posts as to the quality of the speakers to employ, which is directly proportional to the depth of your pocket - you could spend more on the speakers than on the Montage if you like. Actually connecting them to the Montage requires only a pair of cables with 1/4" mono jacks on the Montage end, and whatever suits your chosen speakers on the other (probably 1/4" also). Connect them to the Main L/R outputs - when you get your Montage all this will be explained in the Manual, with illustrations.

It sounds as if you are looking for your own entertainment at home - me too. I have become interested in FM synthesis through this Forum - a lot of expertise and willing assistance here! However, I am not a perfectionist, nor a real musician - I just like messing with sound in a fairly broad sense, so after initial disappointment with the sound quality of Montage due to inadequate monitors (the Montage is the most demanding of synths in terms of speaker quality) I have settled for using a Sony mini hi-fi system (which I already had) as a main speaker!! Don't laugh! I added a little 4 channel mixer to give a little more control over EQ and volume, and allow connection of my Tyros 3 and Korg M3 into the system. You could connect your PSR? It adds another string to the sonic bow ... it is very much a 'home' system, but it suits me fine.

If you have other people to consider, a decent pair of headphones work well. I have a Sennheiser pair, which are good for detail as well, and cost less than 1 x HS7,monitor, for example. Montage provides a headphones stereo 1/4" socket round the back ...

I personally like presonus sceptre s8. But jbl monitors are also great. I have s8 and it sounds great. Though I am not really an expert just like trying to make beats. I usually use headphones but s8 is quite helpful when my ears are tired.
